It's my eldest's 21st birthday in 2 weeks and as he's a part time DJ I'm going to try to make this cake.
I bought the black and grey icing and a 30" x 18" cake board today - it's enormous! I have 23cm/9" square cake tins and was thinking one vanilla and one chocolate cake for the turntables. Worrying now I might have bitten off more than I can chew but I'll post a picture regardless. Wish me luck!
It will look fab! Can't wait to see a picture. I've got a Mickey Mouse cake to do for my nephew this week.0 -
Thanks. Good luck with Mickey.0

ohh I just found this thread... I bought a giant cupcake silicone mould from amazon a couple of months ago and thought I would attempt to make a cake last week...
It was my first time using my icing syringe too .. it didn't look too bad but tasted a bit 'heavy'.. like it could have been more lighter like a fairy cake I need a new recipe! any suggestions?0 -

Hi guys,
I've seen people create amazing cake toppers with wires (where there are pieces of wire with an icing shape/sweet on the end of it)
I was wondering what type of wire this is and where you can purchase straight pieces of it (which can be curled). (online/highstreet)
thanks0 -

I haven't made them before but I think it's florists wire which you can get from loads of places online. E-bay sell loads of it as do most of the cake supply sites. HTH x0 -
Just popped on to say thank you to Ems for her help doing a mini car cake - i took it at the weekend and they loved it. i was a bit worried it didnt look like a mini but everyone said it did.
Heres a pic
Now im after some more advice, how do i get buttercream really red?? Im meant to be doing burlesque themed cupcakes for this weekend and was planning on doing the buttercream red because i thought black would be impossible, when low and behold i think red is just as hard. I bought the christmas red sugarflair colouring but no matter how much i put in it just turns pink - i even had the buttercream nearly white before i started. Any tips please??0 -
Hi, Ive been making cakes for a couple of years and have never been able to get the buttercream red yet! Like you said it only ever turns out pink. I have considered ordering red paste from America as they seem to have such bright colours. Apparently they have so many E numbers in them to get those bright colours that they are banned in the UK!:j:T Gorgeous twin girls born 1st Nov 2012 :T:j0

Sugarflair red extra is what you need it's quite expensive, but very concentrated so you don't need loads. Use Trex instead of butter, and your buttercream won't be yellow to start with.
I made Elmo cupcakes and the red came out fine.
