Dontknowanymore it doesn't look horrid! It looks lovely!

Danielag that looks fab! Did you use the tiffin tin? What recipe did you use, and how long did you cook it for?

    Hi,

I love to bake but don't often make fancy cakes, but this year myself and my mum are making my son's christening cake and I am thinking of making this topper:-

http://cakejournal.com/archives/how-to-make-a-train-cake-topperI just wanted to ask what is Gum Paste, Cornstarch Duster and Tylo Glue and where is the best/reasonably priced place to get them from?

    Thanks!

    Jen

P.s Love all your cakes, they look fantastic! Makes me want to bake more often!

Hi, thanks AnnieH, yes used the tin, just did my usual chocolate sponge, took just over an hour to cook, i under filled the tin slightly, but I know for next time now, for this one i just used white sugarpaste & 'painted' it pink, i will use pink for the proper one:)

Good luck with the cake. Don't forget to post pics when you're done :)
Gum paste is sugarpaste with added gum, such as trag or CMC or Tylo. It makes sugarpaste firmer for modelling with.

Cornstarch duster, I assume is a muslin filled with cornflour, used for dusting your work surface to stop your sugarpaste sticking.

Tylo glue is glue made from Tylo powder and water. You can buy edible glue in a jar, but this is homemade version, much cheaper, and just the same.

Oh no I meant it tasted horrid! Literally like a bathroom sponge!:rotfl:
Me my mum and sis were all sitting round the table, the silence and awkwardness was broken by me saying "omg this tastes vile" you've never seen 2 people agree as quick! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The next one I knocked up with the kids for my birthday tasted absolutely devine, so moist, I was really pleased with that one, even if it didn't look up to much, but my sons wanted to ice it so I think it looked great really.

I only have a loaf tin, lost all my baking stuff when I had to leave in a hurry :(
So I want to start builing up a selection of tins and tools, anyone know where I good place to start? As in tin sizes and piping sets? Sort of like a basics list, I'm going through the thread to see if there already is one, I may be a whle! lol

I want to experiment mainly with cupcakes but got a few birthdays coming up including both my children and I really want to have a go at something a bit fancy.
My eldest is lego and mario mad and I have seen a few ideas I would like to turn my hand to.

so, got a busy week coming up, its my dad's 73rd birthday on Wednesday, and I'm taking on the task of making a cake like a box of chocolates for him. We are having a get together on Sunday so I have plenty of time to have a go at it. Will post pics once I've done.

Plus, I've been asked to make a cake and 2 dozen cupcakes for a baby shower in April as well, really excited about that one! :D
You're so very special, I wish I was special

  • Look forward to seeing that cake Moosetastic.

It's my eldest's 21st birthday in 2 weeks and as he's a part time DJ I'm going to try to make this cake.

I bought the black and grey icing and a 30" x 18" cake board today - it's enormous! I have 23cm/9" square cake tins and was thinking one vanilla and one chocolate cake for the turntables. Worrying now I might have bitten off more than I can chew but I'll post a picture regardless. Wish me luck!
