ok
I dont think you would get free calls if you used the ip phone though as it wont be through 1899 voip software, so you would have to dial their 0808 number i.e 3 p connection0 -

I have now started using Sipgate as my incoming landline call provider, and Call1899 for my outgoing call.
The reason why I use Sipgate, is because they give you a FREE geographical phone number. e.g. 01242. And you don't have to have you own local std code. So if you receive/make most calls mostly to e.g London, you can, if you wish, have a London 020 code.
I have registered my free sipgate 01242 (Cheltenham) number with Call1899, so when I make my totally FREE landline calls, people see my 01242 number. When they call me back, it comes through to my Sipgate software
I have just given Telewest 30 days notice to cancel my landline, which means, I will now be saving over £150 per year!
This is now my telephone system.....
all for FREE
(Software in picture on left is sipgate. Software on right is ""firefly" 3rd party which can be used for Call1899)
Hi Art, I downloaded the Software for 1899 a couple of weeks ago. I have tried quite a few times to make calls, but I don't hear any ringing tone, nor do the calls connect.
I receive the message that the call has "timed out". I have used VOIP with other services prior to this, but have always managed to connect. I am using dial-up and not Broadband, but have been told that it works with dial-up. Do you enter the digits in the normal way - 020 8123 0000
(London destination)?
Many thanks

Have you registered you Sipgate phone number with 1899? If not, go do it. You will then be abl;e to dial out on 1899 and people will see the call as coming from your sipgate phone number.
hope this helps.0 -

Hi Art - Thank you, but why do I have to register it, as I still intend keeping my Ground Line? I looked at the Sipgate site, but I never saw a Registration Page. I was under the impression that the 1899 Software was all that was required? Would you mind, please, sending me the link to the Registration Page?
Thanks loads.0 -
Register you sipgate number with call1899. That way you will be able to use the call1899 s/w to make OUTGOING calls, and use Sipgate for INCOMING calls.
Hope this helps.0 -
Great tip artnada, thanks. Just set up sipgate for incoming, 1899 for outgoing VoIP with an X-ten X-lite softphone and USB handset.
Works brilliantly - and all totally free!!!

Hi everyone,
I've just installed this, but am finding that the other party cannot hear my voice. all they hear is an electronic sound. I've tried calling my own landline and get the same. Anyone else experienced this?
Cheers,

You guys are more helpful than 1899. I asked about using 1899's voip in a wifi PDA.Q. Thank you for info about voip. Is this usable on a PDA (with wi-fi internet access)?
A. Thank you for your mail. We advice you to go through your PDA manual. We hope this has answered your question.
I think artnada and TOG have answered the question. 1899 and Sipgate (I have the number - start with the cheap parts!) seem to be compatible rather than alternatives. I was tending towards Xten anyway. Now I've got to decide which PDA, and figure it all out. Do these services depend on a fixed IP address? I want to use it abroad in a free wifi area for cheap (or even free now) calls. 18866 to call me; 1899 to call back. I'd be grateful if anybody can point me to forum/tech sites that would help. I hope things have moved on since Sipgate said this in Nov:I am sorry. I have no experience with PDAs, nor do I know anyone that is using one with a SIP phone. If I had any advice, I would give it. sorry.0
