Tried it. Doesn't work for me :-(
Have you read 1899's new statement on their site? from 20/5/05 they will no longer support IP clients other than their own! Damm!!!!
18866 have banned VOIP altogether!
1899 may do the same soon. Then what?
How can they ban 1899 with other VOIP clients? can they tell?0 -

What? That means my new VOIP router is not gonna be a good buy! What about Voipbuster? (I'm not signed up for it though).0 -

Maybe they mean they just won't help with problems regarding 3rd party software. I think it will be a little short sighted of them, if they somehow prevent the use of 3rd party software or hardware. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Presumably, it is to stop people using ATAs and VOIP routers as a replacement to POTS? That is what I was going to do! Can still have multiple incoming numbers of course with SIPGATE.
Can't think why they want to stop other software clients though.0 -
A very interesting and helpful thread - many thanks for all the useful info from those with more VoIP knowledge than me (as mine = none)
I am still unsure about 1 thing though - I got a free sipgate 0131 (Edinburgh) number and successfully installed the X-lite screen phone thing. I still need to buy a usb handset or a mic/headphone set (I see amazon.co.uk have one for £7 ish). [http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005UPCY/]
My question is : when people call me on this sipgate number how much do they pay? Do they pay the local call rate in their country (eg: South Africa) even though they are calling a UK number or is it free or what?
For calls FROM people I need to know the above, but for calls TO people overseas I don't really see any advantage of VoIP as I can call for 1 or 2 p a minute on my landline using ratebusters or similar.
Sorry if I am being a bit thick!

Also, there is a programme on BBC2 at 7pm tommorrow (Friday 20 May) which sounds interesting:
The Free Phone Call Revolution
Fri 20 May, 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm 30mins
Millions of people are discovering how to make free calls using their computers. New businesses offering free call services are signing up hundreds of thousands of users a day, and that's bad news for the giant telecoms companies who face a revenue crisis.
The Money Programme investigates the new so-called Voice Over Internet Protocol - or VOIP - revolution, and asks how the traditional phone businesses will survive? BT is responding with a £10b investment programme, and a range of new broadband services, but can it turn itself round fast enough to cash in on the VOIP revolution, instead of being swept away by it?

I also see that Yahoo! has updated its Yahoo! Messenger service with a free worldwide Voice Over IP service which can be dowloaded at:

Your callers would pay whatever their telephone provider charges to call any UK number, your sipgate number is classed as a normal telephone line from other countries. UK users would also pay normal charges.
If the people you call overseas have a computer and register with sipgate, the call would be free.0 -
Calls to Sipgate are also free from the following SIP providers: http://www.sipgate.co.uk/user/tarife.php?show=6It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
