What is more useful for family w/kids, dishwasher or tumble drier?

If you can. get both.
There are 3 of us and we manage more than well with a slimline dishwasher, and a tumble dryer in the garage. I would prefer a tumble dryer inside the house but unfortunately not enough space. But I couldn't cope without the TD - esp in the Winter!0 -
We have five kids and I swear without a dishwasher we'd probably be divorced. We cook alot from scratch, we get through alot of kitchen stuff and so the dishwasher is a massive time saver for me.
We've never had a tumble dryer and do get by without one (the odd emergency requires hairdryer on the waistband of jeans every now and then but we cope):j BSC #101 :j0 -
I wouldn't be without either of them.
Bought dishwasher when expecting 2nd child as I felt I wouldn't have enough time to spend with the kids after working all day (and I decided life was too short to waste it doing dishes!)
I have full size one but my friend has a slimline one and its fine - just needs put on most days whereas mine only goes on every few days.
Tumble dryer a godsend in winter, although I do put the clothes on a clothes airer overnight and then put in the tumble dryer in the morning for a short time to finish off. I never put clothes in directly from washing machine.
I had a bosch d/w but now have an indesit and just as happy with indesit as with the bosch.
Have a candy sensor dryer and its brilliant. Senses when clothes are dry stops the cycle so you're not using any more elec than you need to.0 -
BOTH!! save your energy for more important things than washing up and moving wet washing about. I have a dishwasher in the kitchen and a tumble dryer in the garage and if either broke down I would replace them asap. I really love the smell of washing blown dried on the line and obviously the cost factor but when the weather is bad I don't hesitate to use the dryer. My dishwasher does a far better job than I do and I think I deserve it!!
Another thought: if my OH has a job to do he buys the appropriate tool, none of them get used as much as my DW and TD!!Slightly bitter0 -
Having a newborn in winter, the tumble drier was vital. We would literally have had no clothes to wear otherwise. Once we reached toddler stage, the dishwasher became more useful.
As has been mentioned, condenser driers give you the opportunity to put it in any room/cupboard/shed/garage, so having both should be an option in most cases.Shrinking my mortgage!

I only have one more child than you, and my DW is on at least twice a day and sometimes 3! I can't imagine being able to run it only two or three times a week, and ours is a full size 12 place setting one too. Do you hand wash a lot of pots and pans then, or only use it for dinner dishes? I put virtually everything in mine and only run it when its full.0 -
That's a really hard choice as I couldn't really manage without either but if I had to make a choice then I would keep the tumble drier and get the kids to do the washing up!:D
A tumble drier is a godsend in winter and wet weather, and I don't really like putting the washing on radiators. Also I hate ironing and would rather throw the clothes in the tumble drier to get rid of the creases. I have a condensation drier which is fab as it stops the kitchen getting all steamy. However I bought my house around my dishwasher as the kitchen had to be big enough to fit it in - luckily it's big enough for both items!! I love my dishwasher and could never go back to washing by hand especially after a large Sunday roast!0 -

It's on roughly every other day, sometimes its kept until 3rd day but gets a bit smelly by then (Oust is wonderful). I wash large pots and pans by hand as they take up so much room in the dw, I handwash plastic containers as I did put them in dishwasher at start and they discoloured. Kids have disney glasses and fancy mugs and bowls which I wouldn't put in in case the pattern came off. Mine is 12 piece as well but we only have cereal for breakfast, nobody home for lunch and then the dinner dishes.
Also we eat at MIL's once a week so less dishes that day, trying to persuade her to feed us more often but not working so far:rotfl:0 -
