I have both and use both regularly. We have always had condenser tumble driers and they are fine IMO. They can also be put in lots more places than a vented one. You may find you do in fact have a corner in your house where you can fit one in, as a trek to the shed in wet weather would not be fun (in dry weather I imagine you might just hang your washing out anyway). I have friends who keep their tumble driers in the cupboard under the stairs, in the bathroom, and stacked on top of the washing machine using a special bracket for example.

I have both and use both. I could not imagine not having either one. If my washer, tumble or dishwasher broke it would be a national emergency in my house.
  • Both.

But if push came to shove, I would have to say the dishwasher comes first. I was given my first one, a fifteen year old Ariston when my youngest was born and didn't think I would get on with it. When it finally packed up, five years later, I lasted all of a fortnight before getting my Bosch. That one is now about 8 years old and was the last appliance to leave my old flat and the first to be connected up in my house.

The tumble drier I was first given was an ancient mini one. It was pretty rubbish in some ways, but, living in a flat with no outside area for drying and a severe condensation problem even with open windows in December, it was the lesser of two evils - damp mouldy flat and smelly, wet clothes or damp, mouldy flat with clean, fresh ones - what's a girl to do?

I finally got rid of it this January and replaced it with a full size condenser (as there isn't a space to vent one in the house). It has made my life even easier as I never have to wait for the rain to stop with wet washing in the machine or panic that something urgently needed is out on the line. Had I had a convenient place to vent the old one (or a garage/shed with a safe power supply), I probably wouldn't have bothered upgrading - interestingly, the person who gave me that TD has gone through 5 vented machines in the time - all White Knight.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • We have both, although we only got the DW last year, whilst getting a new kitchen. Don't use the TD a massive amount, but always dry our DD's clothes in it, and towels. DW is amazing - only a slimline version, but so worth having.

I haven't read all of the posts, but for me, it's a tumble drier. If mine broke tonight, I would be buying a new one tomorrow - well, maybe I'd take a little longer as the weather is so good at the moment, but for most of the year I would have to get a new drier immediately. I have had vented and condenser driers - and it is a condenser every time for me! My current drier is five years old and is a Comet own brand (it was the cheapest int he shop). No problems at all.

My circumstances are probably a bit different to most people's, as I have a disabled child. He is doubly incontinent and has chest problems (among a long list of other problems). I cannot leave wet washing on the radiators as it affects his chest, but I always have lots of washing to do.

I'd love a dishwasher, but cannot afford one at the moment. No one in our house likes washing up, and dishes seem to spring up out of nowhere. But washing up never hurt anybody. It is an activity that takes a short amount of time, whereas drying clothes on the radiators takes a while and prevents heat getting around the room.

DW for me everytime - and def a full size one - even then we still have to run more than one load some days.

TD I have one but only use it to get towels fluffy and for king size sheets we don't have room to hang inside (go out when its dry). its handy when I have forgotten to wash uniform, or the kids are sick but could live without it. I have a condenser so we can have it in the cellar and its fine
