personally i would say tumble dryer is more important, we have both and i wouldnt like to be without either but will wash up if i have to lol

i will not have clothes drying around the house, all our rooms are decorated how i want them so i do not want to see loads of laundry everywhere,
my little gang go through clothes like no bodys business with three lots of uniforms, plus weekend clothes and i have boys so they get messy, plus all the bedsgheets bath towels etc, hubby and i both work full time so it is just convenient for me and more important for me to have a tumble dryer,

our tumble dryer is in the garage

    DISHWASHER!

Definitely but we do have both a condenser dryer and a Li line dishwasher which is good enough for us and we're a family of four but my girls are with their Dad on weekends so we rarely have 4 person lunches just dinners and breakfasts.

Tumble dryer can pretty much negate the need for ironing too though so both are huge time savers.

Seriously, find a way to have both :) Our tumble dryer is in the spare bedroom at the moment and we had a large walk in airing cupboard in the last place and it went in there with the things that couldn't go in it, on hangers above it.

I had a combined washer dryer a few years ago but didn't really like it, it seemed quite noisy and inefficient.

And since the max dryer load is usually a lot smaller than the max washer load, so in order to do a combined wash/dry program the load needs to be small.

It wasn't a top end one though, and it was new about 6 years ago, so they may have improved.

Thats true about the differing load sizes but the tumble dryer bit was really only used if things needed to be dried in a hurry I don't think I ever put a load on to be washed and then dried straight after automatically.

We've got a condenser tumble dryer and I love it :D We got a John Lewis one as they are made by one of the German manufacturers (not sure which) and comes with a 3 year guarantee, rather than the standard 1 year which most others seem to have (and it got a good review from Which?) It dries clothes brilliantly and I really couldn't fault it.

We bought a washer dryer when we moved into this house 5 years ago and had nothing but trouble with it. The dryer stopped working just after the 12 month guarantee ran out, so we had to get that fixed. Then a year later it stopped heating the water properly for the washing. So we ditched it and got just a washing machine as we decided we could manage without the dryer - that was until DS came along!

I'd love a DW but there is no room in the kitchen unless we put the WM machine in the garage - but the garage is detached so that would mean having to dash back and forth in the rain on wet days, which I don't fancy. So for now DH will just have to carry on doing the dishes ;):p

We have a really small kitchen, and have a slimline dishwasher and a washer-drier.

I absolutely wouldn't be without the dishwasher. Slimline is fine for us though (2 adults, 2 children). It generally goes on once a day, but occasionally twice a day at the weekend if I've done a roast or something.

I'm not a bit fan of tumble drying everything, its costly, bad for the environment and wears clothes out quicker IMO. So I have a washer-drier. This works well, as I have the facility to dry stuff in an emergency, but I don't use it that frequently. Most of my washing goes out on the line in the summer, and over an airer in front of the fire in the winter. I occasionally do a socks/pants load on a wash & dry cycle if I have full airers!

So I would suggest a dishwasher, but don't rule out a washer drier! I wouldn't personally waste kitchen space on a full tumble drier, as I would only use it once in a while, but I guess that is personal preference.

There's not much to contemplate really.

Dishwasher in the kitchen where it needs to be, tumble drier in the garage where it's out of the way for the 4-6 months of the year when you don't need to use it.

If there was absolutely no way/nowhere to have both a dishwasher would win hands down for me. I won't even choose a holiday rental without one :D

  • I have a condensor dryer in a cupboard under the stairs. Resisted one for ages but its really useful in wet days for drying stuff like bedding/towels. I worked out the cost and to dry a load of towels costs roughly 40p for me, cheaper than the laundrette.

I would love a dishwasher but need some plumbing work and would then need to rip out a cupboard and would only have room for a slimline one.

I line dry laundry whenever possible but once darkest winter hits have to use the drier or for stuff that doesnt like it, a maiden.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

Our dishwasher broke just after the one year warranty ran out and we didn't replace it for ages. I found that I baked a lot less due to the mess caused and the amount of washing up created. It also means that you have more workspace when cooking up a storm because you can put stuff straight into the dishwasher.
I also have a tumble dryer and if it broke down I would go out and replace it straight away. I can't get washing dry in bad weather without having it hanging around all over the house and it looks a mess. We also have a fair bit of building work going on (for the last 6 years ) so clothes won't stay clean if they're dried inside. We have a condenser dryer and it keeps the utility a bit warmer. We get awful damp problems out there due to it being a single skin room and as we have had to strip off the plaster from every room in the house due to damp, I don't want to dry stuff with it hanging around. I work nights and I am the one who does the housework. If we didn't have a tumble dryer, stuff would be hanging on the line for days on end until it had to be rewashed. I do try not to use it but sometimes it does have to be used. In the winter it is used all the time.
I got a dehumidifier due to the damp problems and it is running all the time too. It is amazing how much moisture this pulls out of the air. I do sometimes hang undies on a little peg round thing and hang them over the dehumidifier and place a clothes airer in front of it but the stuff doesn't dry that quickly.
I use drier balls in my dryer and they cut down the drying time quite significantly. They beat the clothes around and help the air to circulate. I then use the water for the garden when it's needed there or use it to flush the loo if it's not needed on the garden.
I do like having my dishwasher too because it saves me time and saves me having to get up in the afternoon from my night shift and have to wash dishes from the night before. Noone else sees the mess so I used to have to do this before I could make the following evenings tea.

I think really, as the woman is expected to do the most, she should get the say in what you have and if she wants both, find a way to fit them in. Sorry to be sexist but that is the way it seems to work in most families that I know and we all work as much as the husbands. If we weren't working we'd probably have more time to be energy saving and plan our washing needs around the weather. Don't forget that we do an awful lot more washing than used to be done so most families have at least one load per day to wash.

Dishwasher for me.....I have a 7.5month old who wears reuseable nappies and a ridiculous amount of clothes and never needed a tumble dryer..possibly due to the line I put up in our covered alleyway;) Failing that we have radiators & a lovely big staircase to drape things over, luckily I'm not too fussed about washing draped everywhere its the toys strewn everywhere that threaten to break my neck that worrys me:rotfl:
We don't have the space for a dishwasher atm either but it is definitely the 1st thing on my list for when my outhouse is converted into a utility room.....I'm sick of doing the pots and I'm sick of trying to find different variations of 1-pot meals as I really do not want to be washing up a bajillion pots & pans if I can help it:)

We have just moved to a house with a dishwasher and washer (no TD) from a house with a washer/dryer and no dishwasher. Personally, I would say the DW is what I would choose, if I asked my OH she would say the TD. It all comes down to person preference.
