    Hi there
I have been having a look at the comments about Firefox and decided to download it yesterday, after a couple of weeks with IE running very slow. I was blaming Fast4 and the school holidays.
Got Firefox, it runs fine, a lot faster than IE was doing.

I downloaded a page from the "Which" site and when it was displayed in Firefox it was not exactly the same.
The following comment was near the top of the page
    "
This site will look much better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device."
Any ideas how to improve this?
    Thanks,
    Fortyfoot
(This "Bold" came on, on its own! Are there any esential add ons which I need for MSE and other applications?)

Thanks for that sra. I should have explained more about what I was doing.
A few days ago I was trying to send an MSE member a copy of a report, but it did not get through with all the information intact. I have since been sending a "blind" copy to myself when sending a web page.
When I opened the web page in the blind copy e-mail, it was then that Firefox did not display it as it was on the site. If you PM me with your e-mail address I will send a copy to you, if you want me to do so.
Thanks for your interest in this problem,

copper regardless of what i have runing in the back ground as i say there was a problem with firefox, the resources would just go up and up and up (it dosent stop) the longer you was online, with the hours im online a day this was no good to me.

This sounds rather strange and not something I've heard of before and I've been running Firefox for around a year now. I regularly have a couple of pages with multiple tabs open that I use regularly, as well as Thunderbird, Excel, MSMoney and anything else I'm working on, open for up to a week at a time before I notice any significant drop in performance, and that's usually contributed to by various other processes running daily, i.e. virus scans, adware/malware scans etc. My PC runs 24/7 and I usually do a reboot just once a week to refresh everything

Edit: ... just to add that my PC isn't a superdooper fast machine or anything either ... only 256mb RAM (needs increasing) and a Celeron 2.00 ghz CPU ;)

  • Sorry but I'm curious, why do you leave your PC on all the time? I've always thought that it's completely unnecessary to do so unless you're constantly downloading *cough* big files in the backgrounds. That computer sitting there with no-one using it will be using a lot of electricity, especially if it's a desktop. Laptops are more efficient but still, what's the point?

Even if it is "fairly old" like you suggest, I think the benefit you'd gain from saving all that energy (and, obviously, money) would trump the longest of start-up time waits... And if your PC struggles to "boot up", I would suggest that a regular defragment cycle is just what it needs, along with a declutter. Or, as a last resort, there's always a good old Windows reinstall if you have the CD/DVD and licence keys available (I could go on and vent about how Microsoft et al seem to love making it more difficult for the people who've actually paid for their software...).

I mean, unless you run a home server (in which case there are plenty of better options than a big old desktop chugging away all night and every day, costing you a small fortune), what's the point? The "lag" usually gets noticeable if you leave the computer on for several days anyway, so why not turn it off properly?

Then again, I'm one of those people who's never understood the laziness of the "standby" function... ;) *sigh* I cheered when the "Standby Saver" appeared on Dragon's Den; although I did feel as though I should've patented the idea when it came to me  Still, why don't they just remove the standby feature entirely, and put proper power switches with satisfying "clicks" on the front of Freeview boxes and other set-top boxes, for example? I get sick of unplugging them at the mains.

Edit: So I've just noticed that the last post here was from April 2005! Oops... Even so, my attitude to all this stuff was instilled within me long ago, before any hint of the "credit crunch".
  • Anyone having problems with firefox should try Opera which is a good alternative. It is more basic than firefox but is a bit quicker and not as resource hungry as a result. Definitely more secure than an IE too but then what isn't!

  • Ok mateypeeps.....

what is the best from Firefox, IE and Mozilla......is the only difference between Mozilla and Firefox the fact that Mozilla is developer country whereas firefox is and end user program?

I could not but help notice this post, I thought at first my age was creeping up on me as I did not remember posting here to be asked a question by name!
