OK. So I have Firefox, the extensoins and the plug-ins I am comfortable with and Firefox is now my browser of choice.

Next step is make it my default browser. Feels a bit scary. What should I expect when I do this and, most importantly, can I undo it if I change my mind and if so, how?

Sorry to sound like such a wimp, but basically, thats what I am :D

After you've changed, any shortcut to a webpage (the page icons with an 'e' on them) you have on your system will change to a firefox symbol.

Also whenever you are using another program and let it use the internet, firefox will launch instead of IE (e.g when you go to Help then Home page in most progs).

Apart from that you shouldn't notice any difference

You can make IE your default again by...

    In IE - Tools/Internet Options

    Click the Programs tab.

Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.

    Click OK.

Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.

Mozilla is a complete suite of programs with lots of options (so harder to use)
    Firefox is a lightweight browser.

There's a good history of Mozilla - and its relationship to Netscape here
    and for Firefox here
  • see, now you say it it's sooo obvious!
I know all about mozilla and netscape....i was designing my first "homepage" (god love me!) in netscape navigator 3 Gold!!
Unfortunately when netscape kind of lost it's way with v4+ i migrated to IE (under duress though) and for some reason i never got on with opera.
So, Firefox is the "browser" and thunderbird the "email client" whereas mozilla is the old netscape navigator gold, with the email, editor and newsgroup client brought intothe 21st century!? So then.....
where does netscape now fit into all this?? A recognised name for the mozilla suite?

i already have mozilla but somehow use firefox.......

Can I thank everybody on this thread for their contributions, from Rush who started it to Talon the last contibutor before me. I had been wanting to ditch IE for sometime without having the confidence to do it. If Rush thinks she's a novice, she's Albert Einstien compared to me, so these are major decisions for the likes of myself. Anyway 12 hours in and I'm wondering what was all the fuss about. Thanks again.

Edit: Would it be cheeky to ask if there is an Operating System that can replace XP or Win 98 as easy and as cheaply. Ta.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself. When you remove the bandages you see nothing. If you are always reading between the lines your probably missing what's written on the lines! I cannot get enough fruit cake.

I'd assume that the BT Yahoo browser is just an adapted form fo IE (?)

Firefox is completely different. It's similar enough to IE so that a newbie can use it and it's usually much faster than IE. If you read the first posts in this thread you'll see that you can have both - and just play about with firefox when you feel like it - it doesn't take over your internet browsing unless you tell it to be your deaulticon7.gif

Thanks sra, might give Firefox a go! :D

I just pop in now and then.... :)

There are some good extensions here (if you skip by all the very techie ones)

You maybe shouldn't put too many extensions on in one go in case something conflicts - or you'll not be able to figure out which new thing is causing you the problem.

So I usually leave it a few days after adding something before adding something new.

The one's I've added in the past few days are:

flashblock: flash adverts etc. are replaced on pages by an 'f' symbol - so you only see them if you click it. Also stops those pop-under adverts that are sometimes missed by the pop-up blocker. (Highly recommended)

Minimize to tray: Middle-click Minimize and Firefox goes to the tray so you can launch it quickly from there

(because they are not hosted on the official Mozilla site, you'll have to click the bar that appears at the top of the page before it'll allow them to be installed)
