Blight alert !!!! *********

I have "freckles" on the leaves of my charlotte potato plants - is this blight then? And does it mean that I have to bin them and can't eat the potatoes?
I have 4 bags of potatoes, 2 with charlottes and 2 with roosters. It is only the charlottes that have the freckling - will the roosters catch it too? They sit right beside eachother.0 -
Got a near miss email the other day. I am just crossing my fingers, mostly. Don't have the room in the garden to spread the potatoes out, same with tomatoes and there's loads of fruit on them already. And the potatoes are far too straggly & all over the place to cover. Hoping that after today's rain it will be dry for a bit which should help. ARGH! If I do see any signs of blight I should be able to empty out a lot of my poly pots of 1st and 2nd earlies, they have been going great guns so should get a reasonable harvest anyway... roosters, will be gutted if they go :-(
I assume the tubers won't grow any more with the haulms cut?0 -
I've got early potato blight (I think) on the ones at home. It's taken over.
However, the Allotment is still OK (crosses fingers)The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.

How do you post pictures? Do they need to be held on an internet page?0 -
if you get blight on your spuds - and you spot it early enough (before it gets to the stem) you can save your crop by chopping the haulms down to ground level - burn infected foliage - and the blight shouldn't get to your spuds underground - depending on when you planted them - would depend on the tuber size and yield - but i reckon it is better to get something, even if they are smaller - than nothing at all

with tomatoes - take off any infected leaves (assuming it hasn't got into the stem) if stems show signs of blight - i would cut off any stems infected - although if they are definitely blighted i would recommend complete plant removal (and instant burn of foliage - to halt any spread)
if anybody is unsure about possible blight - try and get some pics up - so that somebody can try and confirm / deny your suspicions - before you all start decapitating your plants unnecessarily

the blightwatch site has lots of useful information, including pictures. I clicked on the calendar for past years and the biggest blight periods are in july and august :eek:0

I couldn't figure out how to add photos without them all being massive, so here is a link to the album.

I am fearing the worst - can somebody please confirm whether this is blight?0 -
After my initial false alarm, I'm now fairly certain I have been struck by early blight
North West England for what its worth.
I asked 2 more experienced growers to take a look and they were convinced enough to recommend I scalp them and dig up the tubers as they have been in for 14 weeks. My feeling was that I'd rather have undersized spuds to use as 'new' rather than lose the lot in a matter of days.
The welts on the leaves showed the concentric circle pattern that I have seen as being characteristic of early blight.
Pic shows what I salvaged clockwise from top Maya Gold, King Edwards (tiny things) and Wilja. I'm a bit disappointed I didn't get any worth mashing but pleased I succeeded in getting anything at all as this is only my 2nd year growing.
Hope everyone else is successful and has a good crop
