  • Instead of complaining about pennies try saving pounds. Shop at tesco.com pay £3.99 for delivery and use a E-Voucher for £15.00 off for £100 of groceries or an extra 1000 points which you then sell on e-bay. Also have more than 1 clubcard so you can always use an E-Voucher.Don,t pay for the knowledge of these vouchers from ebay just search on the Web. Having worked in retail for 30 years you will always be over charged. Also all these companies that offer you discount to open a store card Take them up on it and when you get your first statement pay it off. REMEMBER NEVER PAY FULL PRICE EVERYBODY WILL COME DOWN IN PRICE . :T

I'm delighted to discover that I'm not the only one who has difficulty with various devious ways that supermarkets price their goodies. It is really confusing and smacks of sharp practice. Can we do something about it, like leave stuff on the floor or something to show our disdain at these frustrating pricing systems?
  • Yes i remember that on Martins TV show, I think it was also on the BBC moneyspinners.
  • my last post is about the value ranges being low down!

personally i think that governing bodies should force supermarkets to seriously reduce their packaging on all types of products. there should be major fines and perhaps bans on them selling certain items unless they cooperate... if that were the case i'm sure they'd stop doing stupid stuff like this!

We could of course get really irritating and unpack everything in the supermarket and tell them to keep their packaging.
I already do this with the plastic bags they use to deliver your home shopping. The divers are instructed to take the bags back if the consumer doesn't want them. They may not like it as it takes a lot more time for them to deliver their rounds, but at least you don't get loads of plastic bags!
Also when I do go to the shops I make sure to have those folding crates in my car or on the back of my bicycle - sometimes even bother putting them in the trolley - and I don't pack any of my shopping in plastic bags, just put everything loose into the trolley and use the crates to carry everything home.

This morning I was buying a few things and the two for the price of one salmon caught my eye 2 for the price of 1 seeming like it might be a good deal. However a closer look and the salmon was 5.99 for two fillets which was extortionate then I noticed a different label on the side of one of the packets for 2.99 partly peeled off. The one on the top and on all of the others was 5.99. They bumped the price up to double the usual price so that they could then "offer" it at two for the price of one at the same price as normal forcing the unwary to buy two packets at the regular cost. I was under the impression that was illegal but as I didn't buy them or argue it out in the shop (lack of time and energy for an argument) I guess they've got away with it. I will definitely think very carefully about whether two for the price of one deals are genuinely good value in future though.

Re the veg, I remember (I think it was him) Jamie Oliver on tv saying that when he did the grocery shopping he would break the sticks on the asparagus so he only paid for the bit he could eat.

I've been doing this for ages on fruit & veg - if they sell fruit & veg per weight it works really well, but doesn't make a difference when it's priced per item.
When buying leeks, just cut/shred off the green bits that you would normally throw out anyway. Same goes for cauliflower (although most supermarkets here sell these per item) chop off the green so you pay for the actual veg and not for the parts that you throw away!

In The Netherlands supermarkets actually have bins in their fruit & veg section so you can deposit the green waste that you don't want to take home! Should be done here as well as we're all getting a lot more concerned about the environment! Also, what's the deal about fruit & veg (EVEN ORGANIC!!!) packaged in plastic anyway???

BTW: I'm now buying my fruit & veg via organic home delivery service and they use 'environmentally friendly' packaging and you always pay the same price for your box, no matter what the weight or price per kg/lbs/piece, etc.
It comes out either equal or even less expensive than going to the local supermarket. If I need anything extra, I go to my local fruit & veg shop, I get my meat at the local butcher and bake my own bread.
Back to basics, supporting the local community & a lot better value for money than buying at those rip-off supermarket giants...

You have to be on the ball and know your prices. That is where a price book comes in handy. Writing down all the common items you buy.

I noticed that Morrisons are doing Robertsons Jams at 99p on BOGOF. But last time I looked In Tescos they where 75p for the same size single Jar.

I have no idea if that is the standard price or not. As I don't buy a lot of Jam. I have no idea if they put prices when they have BOGOFS. I know someone who claims that but I am like

For me I know roughly what price I will pay per item. So tuna is around 37p a tin. So wait until a brand name is on BOGOF offers on and stock up. Same on Loo rolls will pay up to 22p a roll. SO wait until brand name on offer and then stock up.

  • One I've noticed in the past is the "half price" offers on multipacks of beer. These will often be different combinations of bottle/can size than are normally sold. Again, check out the price per litre compared to the supposedly full price items and you'll find they're nowhere near half price.
