    I've been Money Tipped!
The value chocolate has been more expensive than tesco own brand chocolate since Christmas.

As a big raisin buyer (I have a toddler) I noticed that 2 x 500g raisins were cheaper than 1x 1kg of raisins. I emailed them about it: response a month later was:

The 500g size are special price at the moment due to our buyer accessing more stock than expected.

The buyer must have accessed a huge amount more stock as the price is still cheaper on 500g 3 months later.

Well I've spotted this as well... cheeky Tescos...

Have a look at the value fresh chicken breasts next time you're in - I noticed it was cheaper to buy their standard brand than the value pack.

Will certainly bee keeping my eyes peeled on this one....

Oh and a voucher code for online shopping for you.... £5 off a £50 shop XX-C69W

    cheers

I noticed that the shelf edge prices in Tesco on the toilet rolls say something like:

    3.4p / sht

I thought it was being a bit too detailed, until I realised it meant per SHEET.

And so the Tesco bashing continues...

Let's consider the other side of the fence, for just a second...

I confess, I've not read the majority of this thread (basically only the first page), but I get the 'just' of it: Some Tesco Value products are more expensive/or the same price than 'normal' products. Somehow Tesco is 'trying to trick' you all, and is being deceatfull..

I actually work for Tesco, so I have somewhat of a unique insight here. I'm not afraid to make my voice heard, so here goes... Note: NONE of the views here are those expressed by my employers, they are just mine, nobody elses...

Right, first up... The Value pricing thing.
Tesco have people who they employ just for the purposes of buying stock, they talk with suppliers, try to get bulk discounts, buy in advance for things like easter (this went a bit tits up this year, however). Each buyer will specialise in a area in which they are good at. This makes sense, of course. I have no idea how many buyers Tesco has (It numbers in the 100s, I imagine). Now, you'll have a buyer getting in stock for Value Orange Juice (let's just say), and you'll have someone else buying in Tesco Orange Juice... These two people don't have much to do with each other... It just so happens - that for some reason, that the buyer of Tesco Orange Juice manages to buy in bulk enough, at the right price, in order to make the selling price on the shelf the same as the Value Orange Juice. This point is well made by byIromarha:
The 500g size are special price at the moment due to our buyer accessing more stock than expected.
A whoops there... But Tesco has to clear the stock somehow...

Tesco are not trying to trick you. It's a mistake, nothing more. I agree that Value products should be cheaper, and they should be, this should always be the case. But mistakes are made. Tesco is huge, sometimes people make mistakes. It happens; make the most of it, buy whichever is cheaper and get over it. Tesco are currently going through a bad patch in regards to promotions, and getting them 'right first time'. Often offers do not work as they should, or the point of sale is wrong, but that's improving as well, people are learning from mistakes and the mistakes are getting less common.

Tesco is not trying to 'trick' you. You are the consumer, you are God to Tesco. Without you, Tesco is nothing, and Tesco know this. A HUGE amount of effort is put into training staff so they give you a good service, and to make sure Tesco are on the right side of the law. Sure, Tesco get it wrong, it happens, and when it does, Tesco is sorry. Tesco is not perfect. Tesco try to improve and make things right. A lot of feedback I personally recieve is a direct result of customer complaints/feedback.

Regarding labelling... Again, it's sometimes done incorrectly. I agree that labels should be more consistant. Not just in the "£x.xx per 100g" thing, but also in the descriptions on the labels. Again, Tesco have many people who enter this information onto the pricing system; it's not a simple job, and sometimes people make mistakes. One mistake about a year ago on pricing cost the company £10million.

Regarding packageing... Packing is done at the factories before the stock even gets to Tesco. For non-Tesco products, there isn't a huge amount that can be done. For Tesco products, I don't see the excessive packaging issue here. If anything, the packaging has got less recently. Remember your product has to be safe, and goes through a lot of ruff and tumble before it reaches your cupboard. And the whole enviromental aspect is a poor arguement. Tesco put a lot of effort to recycle as much as possible, they have invested a lot of money in making stores more energy effeicent. All cardboard and plastic which is used to contain cases of goods is recycled. All that's left is for the consumer to start recycleing properly....

So next time you think a big corperation is trying to trick you. Think again. Mistakes happen, that's life... But these mistakes are in your favour, Tesco's loss is your gain, make the most of it.
  • On another note, Tesco's will put up the price and then do a special offer of "Buy 2 for £x" and then underneath this it states how much you will save if you buy two together instead of two on separate shopping trips. However, because of the recent price rise you're not actually saving any money!

It's funny how Tesco's are quite open about lowering their prices, but they never advertise their prices are rising. Take 2 Fresh Duck Legs, a few months ago they were priced at 1.99 and now they cost 2.15!

The scales are always really crap though I find!

What I have done is to reject them at the checkout after they have been weighed and priced. I have no problem in refusing to be conned and causing aannoyance to the managers
  • They are taking over the world.

They will be selling cars and houses next.

Cant stick em and prefer Morrisons.

Can someone answer me this? Why do they manage to keep getting so many poxy stores built. We have 5 in a 5 mile radius and my nearest Asda Waitrose Sainsburys & Morrisons are over 6 miles away.

At least there will be more of us, blocking the aisles in the supermarket, with queried and/or pained looks on our faces as we try to work out which is in fact, the cheapest, pound for pound.:D I've been doing this for ages because I refuse to get sucked into buying 'The Special' only to find out it was cheaper to buy another size. However, maths was not my strong point so it takes me a while. (Yes, it's me in Blackburn Tesco's, with the frown, talking to myself and wiggling my fingers around as I do those invisible sums:D :o )

I bought myself a small calculater thats the size of a credit card and is solar powered :) fantastic - I cant use the one on my phone - too advanced 4 me LOL. I've never been good at maths either, but anything that shows per 100g - TIMES by 10 and that gives you the price per Kilo. ViceVersa if its shown per KILO then divide by 10 and thats the price per 100g.
If the shelf label showes per Item - i.e per 1 Weetabix, then look at the NETT weight of the package ...say 300g, then divide the PRICE by the weight but only the first number i.e. 3 (you loose the noughts), this is the price per 100g, multiply by 10 to get the per KILO.
I hope that makes sense ......uummmm I know how to work it cause my husband showed me, but explaining it's a different thing .......plse correct me if I got it wrong :)
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots

    E.g. Value 1 litre Unsweetened Soya Milk - 65p
Tesco Brand 1 litre Sweetened Soya Milk with Calcium and vitamins - 65p

hang on, it's 63p for value and 65p for standard in mine! anyway the reason it is value (and different from standard) is that it is certified organic, and therefore much cheaper than the closest organic rival.

even so, i still buy sweetened.
