Just had a look on the Tesco website and as the OP points out:

Tesco value wheat biscuits - 12p per 100g
Tesco healthy living wheat biscuits - 3p each.

I assume this breaks the government requirements?

I presume so, as that is what i was always told (in fact, i remember there being a section on it in the EPOS supervisors manual entitled "government regulation regarding unit pricing")

You should be able to check this with trading standards i would think.

EDIT: In fact, here we go:

"Similar products should use the same unit for unit pricing purposes to allow consumers to readily compare prices between them. In exceptional circumstances this may mean that a product required to show a unit price per kilogram, for example, could usefully show a further price per 100g. "

    FROM THE TRADING STANDARDS WEBSITE:

    again, hope this helps ;)

  • Whilst shopping in Tesco's lately I have noticed that they appear to be playing a nasty game. Several items were packaged as "Value" products, you therefore expect them to be the cheapest. However I saw a couple of things that were the same price as their standard products.

    E.g. Value 1 litre Unsweetened Soya Milk - 65p
Tesco Brand 1 litre Sweetened Soya Milk with Calcium and vitamins - 65p

I even saw mouthwash where the Value one was 1p MORE expensive than their standard bottle. We are talking the same quantity here too. I checked the ingredients and the active ones were the same.

Another trick is with their labels. Their standard products were priced per 100ml or per litre etc but the value products were marked per item, making it really difficult to compare value.

E.g. Tesco "Weetbix" marked as £ per 100g
Tesco Value "Weetbix" marked as xp per biscuit.

This is all designed to trick us and make it more difficult to shop well. I am really cross about this as we are all trying to be careful with where we spend our money and we would naturally assume that by buying Value products we are being as thrifty as possible, when really we might be getting a substandard quality product for the same or MORE than Tesco's standard product!

Keep your eyes peeled and make sure that you check those prices before buying!!!!

Have you emailed in to complain about it?
    spacey :)
  • I always go to the market - helps to keep the farmers going and it is much cheaper.
  • Also watch out for the reduced prices. Yesterday in Tesco I was going to buy 2 packs of 10 Finest sausages reduced to £1.25 each. Then in the frozen section I found bags of Cumberland & Lincolnshire sausages with 14 big sausages in each bag on a "buy 2 for £2.50" 8 extra sausages and they're bigger

Our tesco has stopped giving multibuy discounts if they're reduced - you used to be able to almost get them to pay you for the food - grrr!

I've found that this is only party true (though it may vary between stores).

At my local Tesco, if the discount is expressed in terms of its own value, it works even on reduced products.

If it is expressed in terms of the total product value, it doesn't work.

By which I mean if it's "Buy 2 and get £1 off" you'll get £1 off even if the items are reduced, BUT if it's "Buy 2 for £3", it doesn't work and you get charged full price.

Still works in the Co-op though :D I got 4 packs of diced chicken and 3 packs of tortellini for next to nothing recently!

I noticed with the sweetcorn as well, checked ingredients and they were the same, only the one with nicer packaging was about 15p more.

I've definitely been paying more attention to these things lately.

  • I've just checked the price of golden syrup at Tesco online. The value gs is 77 p for 680g against 99p for Lyle's in a 907 g tin.If you check the unit price, however you find that they are both 11p per 100g.

The value one looks about the same size as the Lyle's but it's not ;)

Lyle's does taste a lot nicer imo.

Noticed today in Tesco that they were being a bit sneeky with their own brand orange juice. Four pack was priced per 100ml and the six pack was by litre. I would have thought that the six pack would have been better value, but when I worked it out the four pack was actually cheaper. Also, the 1.5 litre cartons (although using less packaging overall) actually costs more by quite a few pence than the 1 litre cartons.
