  • 200g jars of Kenco decaff are more expensive than 2 100g jars
  • On doing my online shop I have noticed lots of items were bigger was not better value, unfortunaetly I didn't make a note of what they were, but I will do and I'll post here when I spot them.

I've been having the price per KG versus per item fight with Tescos for months now. Just another nail in the supermarket bully boys coffin. I have really gone off them in the last year, it's like they have cornered the market then turned the tables on the loyal consumer:mad: I feel the rise of Waitrose is nigh:p

We like empire apples and a bag of 8 apples in Tesco a couple of weeks ago was around £1.85. I looked at price/kilo of loose apples, put 8 in a bag and weighed them, then guessed the price (was about 1.5 kg). At checkout these cost 92p! Half the price cos they weren't in a fancy plastic bag!

i sussed that one out a few years back and it made me more than a bit cross!

though i now shamelessly weigh bags of fruit. if it's cheaper to buy per bag vs per kg then i want the heaviest bag i can get ;)

i also look for the largest broccoli head, peppers etc anytime it's price per each. peppers especially... you often get 3 in a bag for say £1.59 BUT they tend to be small peppers...weigh them to see how much you're getting, use your trusty calculator to do some figures and see if you're actually better off picking your own (and your own colour too..i hate green peppers, it's only the red ones i want, dh likes the yellows)

tends to be 50/50 in my experience

i also weigh bags of potatoes etc... you often get bags that are a fair amount over the stated weight ;)

I don't buy supermarket fruit anymore - I go to the market instead, there's a stall that does bananas 20p a pound, and 20 Granny Smith's for a pound.

At those prices, supermarkets can whistle!

i'd go to the market too for prices like that (well, i'd go even if the prices were the same or a bit higher, i'm loathe to shop in supermarkets unless i have to)

don't suppose anyone knows of a proper market in edinburgh or surrounding areas? all i can ever find out about is that overpriced 'farmer markets' on the weekends

these are the ones with all the artisanal cheese makers, organic meat sellers etc... nice stuff, very happy to promote local produce BUT they aren't cheap... plus they very rarely have fruit and veg anyway

I was going to buy some "Breakaway" bars in Tesco, a few weeks ago. A pack of 12 cost £1.20, a pack of six cost 35p. 2x6=70p, I ended up with 18 for £1.15! When I mentioned it at the checkout, the lady said it was always happening, so check out the smaller packs, bigger doesn't always mean cheaper!

this is something that really irritates me

the fact that they're trying to get you to *think* you;re getting a better deal by buying more doesn't bother half as much as the excessive packaging that is going into landfills because smart shoppers are forced to buy 3 packages to save money over the price of the ONE package!

personally i think that governing bodies should force supermarkets to seriously reduce their packaging on all types of products. there should be major fines and perhaps bans on them selling certain items unless they cooperate... if that were the case i'm sure they'd stop doing stupid stuff like this!

Re the veg, I remember (I think it was him) Jamie Oliver on tv saying that when he did the grocery shopping he would break the sticks on the asparagus so he only paid for the bit he could eat.

Also, in Morrisons when they are doing the deals on stella, we noticed that it is invariably cheaper to buy the four packs than a crate and in Tescos even with offers on the four packs it is cheaper to buy a crate.

Are there any laws that stipulate that sellers have to price all their items by weight as well as per item (thinking of the weetabix here)?

P.S. I am the really annoying one blocking the isles in Bradford Morrisons, whilst I work out whether a couple of 6 packs of loo roll on offer are cheaper than buying a 12 pack (checking all the brands of course!).

    @alleycat, hope this helps:

correct me if i'm wrong, but I used to work in the EPOS dept (tickets and prices) for Somerfield, and we were strictly advised that all unit pricing must be the same for each type of item

I.e all wine should be £xx.xx per 750ml
all cereal should be £xx.xx per 100g
All tins of veg, soup etc should be £xx.xx per 100g
all Fruit/Veg should be £xx.xx per Kg (except for things like coconuts which were each)

As far as i'm aware, this is a government requirement, and tesco could be fined thousands for each item that is above a shelf edge label with incorrect unit pricing.
    Something to look into perhaps?

Just had a look on the Tesco website and as the OP points out:

Tesco value wheat biscuits - 12p per 100g
Tesco healthy living wheat biscuits - 3p each.

I assume this breaks the government requirements?
