You, being on here, are likely be more financially savvy than a large percentage of people. There are swathes of the population though who can easily save money by moving home insurance, transferring card balances etc.

Indeed, but they have posters about all this in all the windows, on the desks etc..

This should really be enough without the "Who is your home phone provider with?" etc etc..

I have found in more recent times Charity is getting worse, I fully understand they need money and if I had tons I would but again.. If I wanted to donate money, I simply would without having to keep being stopped every day near enough for something or other.

I had two charity door knockers within five minutes just before 9pm yesterday. That's far more intrusive as to a degree you are 'fair game' on someone's business premises.

Moneysavingexpert is not representative of the British public's attitude to or knowledge of financial services and money management.

On a daily basis we get people walk into our branch with 30 or 40 thousand in their bank account just because "they couldn't be bothered" to do anything.

We set them up with a savings account or bond and they make 100s, and the branch improves its savings book, its a win for both parties.

Similary with credit cards - balance transfers are my favourite product to sell because it genuinely does help people who are often in a bit of a hole.

"I see you've got a payment for £40 going out to MBNA Mrs Customer, do you mind me asking... are you keeping a balance on an MBNA credit card? The only reason I ask is that you've been pre-approved for one our cards, and we may be able to save you a few hundred pounds by transferring you to ours. How does that sound?"

At the end of the day there are two reasons bank staff try to sell you products:

    1) Because they are targeted to do so and receieve a bonus based on this.

    2) Because they spotted an area they might be able to make or save you money. OK so maybe you've already been online and scoured about for the best 0% credit card or cheapest home insurance deal.... 80% of customers will not and thousands will happily sit with money earning 0.1% in old ISAs because they do not understand the rules on ISAs, they might have £3000 on a 21.9% APR credit card because they did not know about balance transfers... they might be paying £40 a month for home insurance because they never bothered to get an alternative quote.

"That's fine Mrs Customer, not a problem, here is my card so if you change your mind just give us a ring. It's a direct line so no call centres. Enjoy your day."

I have to say that I have used several banks recently (trying to avoid being fed to Santander) including Lloyds, NatWest RBS and Halifax and none of them have been like this about it.
