I agree with other o4u and chambta, although perhaps not best practice*, it's not a breach of the DPA. Unless a prior instruction has been given, one could consider this a type of marketing which, at customer requeste, can be stopped.
*In terms of randomly pointing out information irrelevant to the conversation. The preferred method is, as has been discussed, sales through service which tightly integrates the sale into the conversation, for example:-Customer: "I've had an amount come off my account for £7.99, can you tell who that went to?"
Advisor: "That's a Direct Debit to Carphone Warehouse."
Customer: "Oh dang."
Advisor: "Can I ask is that mobile phone insurance?"
Customer: "Yes."
Advisor: "It's worth mentioning we have a bank account that includes mobile phone insurance, amongst other features, that may be able to save you money there. Would you like me to go through some details?"
Customer: "Yes."; "No."; "My husband/ wife deals with the finances."' "I don't have time."; or "My house is on fire, I have to go!"Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -
We also have to try and sell loads of products, in fact I would say we have it harder than the banks as we have to try and sell
-Insurance - Car/Home/Life/Over 50s/Travel/Van/Pet
-Savings Products - ISA's/Growth Bonds/Instant Savers
-Telephony - Homephone/Broadband
-Travel - Money/Travellers Cheques/Travel Money Card/Insurance
- Mortgages and Credit Cards
Plus all the mails customers and business banking, car taxes, passport check and sends etc etc
Fair enough we get a better basic wage than the banks but we still have to do a hell of a lot, we do alot more varied transactions, we have to know all the different postage options etc etc and we DO feel the pressure! So think twice before you have a go at us!
The frontline always feel the brunt of it sadly but we still offer service with a smile! (most of the time!)
You guys choose the job, so really that's your own problem. No reason for people to have go though. Just say "no" and walk away.0 -

Because the information is there to make the payments only. Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0 -
In terms of Jambosans script, that would be perfectly viable. What is not allowed, is, for example, me ringing you up, as your account manager, and saying "hello Mr Customer, how are you blah blah blah..... I see you have a DD on your a/c to Halifax Mortgages. Would you be interested in my giving you a quote to see if we are any better?"Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0

I can't say that doesn't happen because it does every day. I've got mortgages too doing it.0 -
I'd say the DPA claim is mostly rubbish.
Most of us have probably signed or tick-boxed agreeing that any information we supply to the company can be used in such a way.0 -

I don't think you can tick anything that gives a company consent to use your information in a way that breaches the DPA.0 -
From my own personal point of view, if I am bugged each time to buy a product or service to which I have not asked about really grinds on me that much I decide even if it was the next best thing since sliced bread then I will not bother with them at all.
If I want something, I have a gob and can open it when required... I don't blame the people sitting behind a desk, they are only doing a job but it still does my head in...David

Actually they bought all these extra products in after I started so I didnt 'choose' to do it.
The money is good though, hence why I put up with having to do all the selling/conversationsSlimming World Member - Started 05/02/150 -

You, being on here, are likely be more financially savvy than a large percentage of people. There are swathes of the population though who can easily save money by moving home insurance, transferring card balances etc.0
