I hate all the junk mail they send you 'There's a loan sitting here waiting for you''
Opting out of direct mail with your bank is very easy.
they even sent my partner a credit card when he didn't ask for one
That would be illegal. I hope he reported it. Or did he just get sold one and wasn't prepared to admit that he did actually sign up for it.
  • I do feel for the counter sales staff. They are thinly veiled as cashiers. I know they are under immense pressure to sell. I've been there myself, and it was the reason I got away from working in branch banking, so I try to decline politely. I remember how hard it was to have to push something to nearly every customer I saw, and how disheartening it was to be sneered at or told to get lost. Manners cost nothing.
Nowadays, I'll only go into a branch if it's unavoidable as I end up feeling so bad for the staff.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Average full time cashier earns about £14,000 a year or less. They are just trying to boost this with a £300-odd bonus every 3 months.

Cut them some slack, unless they are rude or obstructive of course.

And the majority get the pressure with no bonus. Threats of the sack aren't unusual.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I've banked with First Direct for over 10 years.

I have to use HSBC to put cheques in.

I've NEVER had a cashier try to sell me stuff.

It's nothing new. I used to work for one of the big high street banks. In my early years I was a cashier in the mid-late 90's and we were 'forced' to sell at the till. I hated it but funnily enough a few years later I ended up a full time member of the sales team! I hated that too!!

The reason being you're not one of their customers perhaps?

I've never been given any sales patter from HSBC.

The PO really irritates me: when sending something first class and asking for a COP always elicits, Is it urgent, does it need to get there tomorrow?' Er, thinking, yes that's why I want to buy first class stamps. 'Oh but you need Special Delivery Next Day' No, I definitely don't thank you.
I now avoid one particular cashier as she looks at me daggers drawn when I politely say, no thanks.
    It's called upselling isn't it?

To save all the hassle, are there any banks or building societies that actually employ bank cashiers that don't do this?

As others have said, HSBC seem to fit your bill - they never seem to market anything at their counters.

In fact, they seem to be reducing the number of counters they actually have in a branch as they assume (rightly, I guess) that most people would prefer to use one of their machines to pay in..

HSBC seems to back up converstions I've had with other people. Our local HSBC is, apparently, not classed as a sales branch, because it's in a small town and does little business.

Sadly, that means it'll probably shut soon!

I certainly take what others have said regarding advising the bank not to market at the counter. I've done this. Sadly, it doesn't always seem to work, and I can't be bothered having a go at the guy behind the counter because, as has been said, he/she is under ridiculous pressure to do something that it appears most of them don't actually like doing. Hence it's better just to find a bank that doesn't market like this in the first place!

Seems an odd way of selling products anyway. I can't believe you get such a variety of people through the door of the bank that you can sell stuff anyway? Surely there comes a point where you've seen everybody.
Used to work for the Halifax; now works for another bank. Any comments are my opinion or suggestion, not a recommendation!
