    There are plenty of legitimate reasons why a customer might wish to do so.
    I can't think of any. Would you care to enlighten me?

    Most mobiles have three settings for caller ID in their menu system: withhold number, don't withhold number, network select.

    Limited testing suggests that:

    withhold number will always withhold caller ID;

    don't withhold number will always release caller ID;

    network select will release caller ID (network default setting) unless number dialled is prefixed with 141 or #31#.

    Not here it doesn't. Have you reported it to Orange as a fault?

    I too tried it. roaming, not roaming, roaming the other handset. crossnet calling while roaming etc etc.... and not once was my number displayed whilst using 141. looks like you have a issue on your own.

    and for those who are messing with the menus for with-holding, that will block all outgoing CLI, unlike the 141 prefix which is a per number basis.

    I didnt think that was the case.

    My understanding is when you select withholding a number by 141 or on the handset then it flags the call to withhold the number on the end users equipment, but the number data is still passed through the call chain.

    If you were to call 999 or make malicious calls the data is passed with the call and could be used to identify you, although obviously this is only available to the relevent authorities.

    I've tested this again this morning, and prefixing 141 when roaming on T-Mobile divulges my number to the called party. I wonder whether this is regional? For example, maybe it's not a problem in regions where 3G roaming on to T-Mobile has been rolled out in the last few days.

    It depends on who you call. Companies with digital switchboard/PABXs who recieve calls from the public network recieve the inbound call dentifier, complete with the full number of the caller, and a flag that says whether the number should be displayed or not. Whether they implement this supression correctly at their end is never assessed, indeed I use a service where withhold callers have their number shown, but with the last 3 digits XXX out. Whilst the callers can certainly decide whether they wish their number to be seen, it remains the perogative of the recipient to decide whether they wish to accept such calls, and I use ACR on a number of lines - Skype also offer this.

    I still equate no number calls as the same as an anonymous letter, and treat them both with equal contempt.

    Bottom line? You may believe your number is being withheld, but it isn't really. Those who want to know WILL know it regardless.

    You need to go back and re-read the message you quoted.

    Hint...

  • Hi NFH,

    I've checked with our network guys and they've had no reports of 141 not working when using T-Mobile's network. If you could let us know your location and what kind of phone you are using, as well as your mobile number and the number you are calling, we can pass this on to them so this can be investigated.

    Unfortunately, we can't receive private messages on here, but if you can contact us as OrangeHelpers on Facebook or Twitter using the links in our profile we can get this looked into for you.

    Hope this helps,

    Yes, that's what I do now if I want to withhold my number, and it works, even when roaming on T-Mobile. But it doesn't change the fact that Orange has already divulged my number in the past to called parties from whom I had instructed Orange to withhold my number.
