Yes, that's what I do now if I want to withhold my number, and it works, even when roaming on T-Mobile. But it doesn't change the fact that Orange has already divulged my number in the past to called parties from whom I had instructed Orange to withhold my number.

You may have missed my point slightly.

You *ALWAYS* transmit your caller ID regardless on every call.

Your phone and the network (ie Orange) can specify the number is withheld from the end users caller line display (be that phone or a standalone unit), but if the customer has hardware that ignores that flag thats not down to Orange any more than it was down to you.

This has nothing to do with it. Even if I dial another Orange number prefixed with 141 when roaming on T-Mobile, the called party sees my number.

Anyway, I just had a call back from Orange Level 2 Product Support, which I believe was further to an e-mail I sent to Customer Services as opposed my communications with the Orange Helpers. I made test calls to one of their Orange numbers, prefixed with 141, and when logged on to T-Mobile my number was divulged to them.

It may have not been down to Orange, although they are the most likely cause, even if they flagged the number to be withheld if the end user has equipment that chose to ignore the flag your number will be displayed.

Orange may have correctly passed the "do not display" flag does not mean it was honoured.

Of course it's down to Orange. If I make a call from my Orange phone (logged on to T-Mobile) to another Orange phone, prefixing the number with 141, then it's entirely down to Orange if my number is displayed without my consent. Who else is it down to?

Please re-read my prior comment or Buzby's.

Dialing 141, or setting the phone to withhold the number DOES NOT stop your number being sent, it simply flags it that it should not be displayed on the end user caller ID system. Your number is sent with every call regardless of that setting.

Lets say you called the police or fire brigade maliciously the hardware they have will ignore the "do not display number" flag and they will have access to the number and be coming to see you ASAP (and quite rightly too).

Most customer level equipment will honour the flag, and even though it can read the number will display it as "blocked" or "not available", however some will ignore the flag and display the number anyway. Businesses with there own PBX may choose to ignore the flag if they want and display the callers ID.

It's possible the flag is not sent correctly by Orange, or it's been removed by Orange, but it's also possible Orange did everything right and the end users has something that displays caller ID regardless of the setting.

If Orange did everything right, how is it that the called party, also with an Orange phone, sees my number when I've withheld it? The call does not leave the Everything Everywhere network, so how can this be the fault of any party except Orange/T-Mobile?

I understand everything you say about the number always being transmitted, even when withheld, but with a flag. However, that is not relevant in this scenario because I'm talking about Orange-to-Orange. In any case, are you sure that the number is withheld at the called party's equipment level rather than at the network level?
