Isn't 141 only valid when calling from a BT landline?

It's going to be in your mobile settings somewhere (how to get there will vary with each phone) so you'll have to go looking through I'm afraid - though usually under "call" settings where other phone operator stuff is stored like call waiting... there should a "caller ID" somewhere which is normally set to "operator default" and in there you will find a "hide number" option. Depending on your phone you might even have the choice between "always hide" or "hide when number dialled isn't in my contacts" or something along those lines.

I tried calling my house phone doing this and then dialled 1471 and it said "withheld number" so it at least works when calling a landline.

That's good to know then :) I thought it was only when calling from a landline.

There should be a setting in one of your phone's menus to enable withheld number all the time. It sets it on the network for you.

I have just discovered that Orange no longer recognises 141 for withholding the caller's number, and the only way to withhold the number is to change a setting in the handset. Therefore if an Orange customer prefixes a called number with 141, the call is successful but the caller's number is divulged to the called party without the caller's knowledge or consent. This change by Orange has significant privacy implications and Orange are unable to tell me when they notified their customers of this.

After further tests, I've found that what I reported above applies only when an Orange customer roams on to T-Mobile. Therefore this appears to be a fault as opposed to a deliberate change by Orange, which would explain why Orange has failed to notify its customers in spite of the significant privacy implications.

The question is, has Orange ever marketed the 141 service, or have people just assumed?

As mentioned in the thread, the correct way to disable called ID on a mobile phone is in the phones menu.

Or by prefacing the number being called with #31#.
