ah if I turn off the wireless on the laptop and then plug in the ethernet then it works? Does this help to figure it out?

yes the internet works/

subnet 255.255.255.0

OK that helps narrow it down.

Go into Device Manager, uninstall your Wireless Adapter, restart the laptop and let it re-install. Before you do that do you have the Atheros driver files?

it's quite an old laptop no drivers, prolly get them off the web though?

Worth getting them just in case although it may automatically find the existing driver when it re-installs. Can't remember with Vista.

I did delete the driver and restart etc but I'll try downloading the above driver and testing that out. I really appreciate your help but the gf is moaning I have to leave it till tomorrow so close! Thanks everyone. Goodnight I'll let you know if it works tomorrow. Cheers!!

Did you remove it by right-clicking on the adapter in Device Manager and selecting 'Uninstall?'

Did you switch the wireless back on when you re-started?
