How to assign IP addresses to computer on home network?

Options
I'm trying to connect my PCs to my router which in turn is connected to a media network storage thingy.

Everything seemed fine except one pc cannot get onto the internet. I have tried connecting a ethernet cable to it and it still won't connect. It did work at one point so I'm thinking it has the same IP address and won't I turned on another pc it must have stopped that one working.

I know you can assign a new ip address to each computer through properties somehow but will I need to tell my router what is going on?

Cheers, Rob

do an ipconfig from the command (cmd) prompt to check to see if it has a local ip address.

if it does, check the connection settings in IE

    What operating system?

    On a working machine...

If you start a command prompt (Start-Run and type cmd in WindowsXP or Type cmd in the search of Windows Vista/7and click on cmd.exe).
On the command prompt window type ipconfig and press enter.

    What does the machine report?

Repeat for the machine that can't access internet.
  • autoconfiguration enabled
    dhcp enabled

what do I need to look for?

oh ok I'll check on the non-worker

    That's the problem!
They should NOT have the same address...
You router should have "DHCP" turned on
Each machine should have the IP addersses blank and the option to "use DHCP" or "Automatically assign IP address" ticked.
On each machine go to CMD and in the window type:
    "ipconfig /release"
    and
    "ipconfig / renew"
Hopefully the 2 machines will have different addresses so they can both see the internet.

Just the one not working but it has a different ip?

Are they all allocated by DHCP or is the non working a static address?

If static is the gateway IP address the same for the non working PC as the others? Is the DNS server address the same as the others? (ipconfig /all should give this information)

How is the "Network Storage thingy" set up? Is it DHCP or static address?
