I only have a paper license, but it is in about 6 bits.

I have some expired points on it, can I send away to get them removed for free and then get a photo license for free as well

Or can I just get them removed and the paper license renewed on its own (free) becasue as said it is very tatty

If I were you, I'd keep hold of your paper licence. If you ever need to change your address, the expired points will be removed automatically and you'll be issued with a new photo licence - which you'll have to pay to update every 10 years. As it stands, your paper licence is valid until you're 70, for free, and the points, being expired, are neither here nor there.

LMAO don't drive then. I am sure no one here really likes to pay for petrol, insurance, MOT, servicing, TAX etc yet its part of motoring. If you really want to be a money saver don't drive walk everywhere.

Motorists pay a lot of tax your right there but atleast that money is put into government and used for the benefit of everyone. Insurance companies receive a hell of a lot more than that per year i'm sure but only a little bit of tax from that is put back into the pot the rest is paid out to fat cats!!!

Since when was the gross turnover of the UK motor insurance business more than £45BN a year?
Insurance companies have to pay corporation tax on their profits, at a rate of up to 26%.

HHMM, aviva one british company alone had a revenue last year 2010 of 58,401 million British pounds. I know they offer other services too which is included in there total revenue but this is 1 company compared with a lot more that offer insurance services to the UK.

Motorists pay £45BN per year to the Exchequer - why do they have to pay for renewing a licence that the is only being renewed because the authorities have deemed it necessary to do so???

It's not necessarily the "authority's" fault though is it; it is biology's fault really. You cannot expect a photograph taken at seventeen to be a true likeness of the same person thirty years later.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Spot on, but with identity theft and fraud so ripe those complaining about renewing it won't mind when there driving license is used for the purpose of fraud etc.
