The thing with disruptive members is that they will continue being disruptive for as long as the admins retaliate on their actions. I've run a thriving vbulletin community for about 5 years now and about 2 years in, when people caused a problem, I banned them. They came back time and time again and the banning was causing a real headache both with me and with everyone else on the board.
So I took the brave step of lifting everyone's ban. They didn't cause a single problem after that. My conclusion from that is - people will only struggle if there's resistance from the admin's end. If you ban someone and they come back and you then ban that guise as well they will only keep trying. If you run the board like it doesn't fluster you they'll soon get bored and get lost.
It worked for my community anyway, might be worth a try here cos no matter what you try, you won't be able to have any site exactly the way you want it.0 -
when they come back do you mean they shouldnt automatically ban the guise? or do you think they shouldnt be banned even if they cause trouble again?Yes Your Dukeiness0

I never bother banning people these days. I find that a far less heavy handed approach works far better - people get bored of causing trouble after a while anyway so you may have a few days where they do but then they get bored and stop.
So I guess what I'm saying is don't bother banning them, don't try and be so heavy handed policing the forum as it will only antagonise the people who thrive from being antagonised.0 -
Hi folks,
Thanks for all the notes.
First of all let me clear up - the Board Guides are nothing to do with the abuse team. They are volunteers to keep the boards running smoothly. The abuse team are paid by the site and do not have any other personality on here.
In terms of response I think we're actually pretty quick. We don't have 24 hour coverage in fact officially our aim is to respond within two working days, but it's substantially quicker.
Remember there are roughly 2 paperback books written on this forum daily. 1.5 million site users. If you look at the big board stats you'll see this forum is the third biggest of its type listed in the world in terms of the number of users online.
We get 1000 abuse reports (often is very small organisationsal things) and we are under huge scrutiny from big companies where there's also a potential of law suits. So we have to run it a certain way to keep the whole thing going.

main reason - advertising, advertisers and spammers have to be banned to maintain the site so people ahve to be banned for that purely
and purely my site mainly but think it could apply for here too (if not only because of one thread posted recently where there was some disgusting behaviour!)
racism is a big issue on my site and no way to get around it without being heavy handed and banning - a majority of the time they would come back and back and backYes Your Dukeiness0 -
