    Hi fellow MSE'ers

Just a quick note to let anyone who, like me, is into freecycle know that a new freecycle kind of website has been formed, but in an "ebay" style format (minus prices of course, as everything on freecycle is FREE!)

For those new to freecyle, it is a worldwide initiative to reduce household goods and others from going into the landfill and adding to the global pollution problems we are facing.

Basically, people "offer" items they have which they no longer need or use, and people who want them message them to say they are interested.

Normally it is run on Yahoo Groups, but since the introduction of this new website - http://www.efreeko.co.uk, you can browse through offers and send messages to the offerers online.

The items are all 100% free. If you can collect, there are no postage costs either.

Because it's nationwide, unless you live local you have to pay for cost-price, fair postage and packaging (ie. a teddybear from South England to Scotland is about £1.50) - but if your local to the offerer, just like on regular freecycle, you have the option of cost-free collection.

I offerred a cook book on there and it went instantly. Plus I've used freecycle for years now, both as a giver and a receiver, and have had many a joyous freebie (our Tv, DVD player and VCR are all from freecycle, as is my beautiful Piano accordion!)

I just wanted to put this up here because I constantly find myself explaning the concept to friends and acquaintances of mine who are all intrigued, hence thought many the MSE-er out there would appreciate it too!

    Cheers
freegenie I have linked to your post from the green and ethical board so that other people can see the site you mentioned.

    Thankyou for posting it :)
  • Since using the site, I have noticed a few other features I really like so I thought I'd point them out.

    (1) A newsletter which summarises the current offers and wants
    (2) The credit system where you earn points for offering things (you can also spend these on requests)

    Hi Jopassmore,

If I am corect, this is your site?

    I was wondering.

I realise that it is a freecycle site but do you make any money out of this site?

I notice spaces for advertising on the pages. What happens to the funds.

I realise that we all have to live but self-promotion on here isn't within the rules.

  • Hi
I did reply to the above but it appears my reply has been removed.

What I basically said was that we are advertising but that what we are receiving in income is far outweighed by the cost of the site. The site was set up as a service to others and also to the environment, not to make us money.

There are plenty of other opportunities for us to make money designing sites, but instead we choose to spend hours and hours developing this one for the good of others.

If this reply is removed, can you please tell me first as I feel I have a right to respond.

    Thanks

    Jo

Your posts before were used to announce new features on your own site. Although members can recommend sites they find useful (if they are not connected to the site). The site owners are not allowed to use the threads to announce features on their own site and/or bump the thread. This could be construed as advertising, and is against the rules of this site. This is most likely why your posts were removed.

  • Okay, thanks for that explanation.

I put the new features on as people were saying it wasn't as good as other sites and I wanted members to know I had improved it in line with their comments. But I won't do it again.
