Camberley Mosque Thrown Out

I had to tell someone - so delighted. Just heard on the radio that the enquiry has resulted in the plans for a new mosque being thrown out.
Don't get me wrong - I am not anti-moslem, they have had a mosque there for nearly 15 years anyway, but the idea of pulling down a locally listed building and building a traditional mosque on the A30 just outside of Camberley town centre was ridiculous, it would have stood out like a sore thumb and would have resulted in our town diing a slow death. Now they can move on and find another site where it would not look so bad if they want to - that is if the paymasters (the details of which they would not reveal) that are insisting it has to be a traditional mosque in that position do not just desert them now.

What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Why would a building sticking out like a sore thumb lead to the death of your town ?
I agree with your post though, some developers think that they can get round listed building rules easily and don't take no for an answer.0 -
How on earth would a church bringing more people involve Camberly (of all places) 'diing a slow death'? Surely it is a healthy thing to have more people coming to the area? I understand the planning concerns on a listed building, mind.
'Paymasters' seems an emotive term - do you mean 'benefactors'? I'm not surprised they won't tell you who is paying for the place, there is a right to privacy of course.0 -
This thread is not going to end well.... and btw, OP, people who start sentences with 'Don't get me wrong.. I'm not anti <whatever>' are often viewed as being just that..."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

'diing' eh?one of the famous 50

A quite small ding though.
A lot of really old and lovely buildings are being knocked down using progress as an excuse.
Down past Burslem they are going to knock down a load of terraced house only to be replaced by new terraced houses. What's the flippin' point.
Who will be able to buy one?
They give people a stupid knock-down price for their old house meaning they couldn't possibly afford to buy one of the new ones.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I wonder if they'd have been so much objection had this building been under threat of being pulled down to build a 'nice CofE' church... no doubt we'll have exhortations of 'It doesn't matter! It's about the building not what kind of church/temple/synagogue/mosque it is!' but I'm not so sure...."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I've objected to buildings being pulled down to make bog-standard shops and/or apartment blocks. The type of building it's intended to be is irrelevant to most people, I suspect.0 -

Possibly not, but maybe not for racist reasons.
There is a fairly large Mosque in the town near me, and some Fridays it is gridlock in some of the roads running near it.
Due to the declining number of people going to the local Catholic & C of E churches this isn't a concern and even if it was, heavy town traffic on a Sunday generally doesn't cause too many problems.
I'm never in the area of the Mosque during the week so I don't know if they do any of the calls to prayer, but if this does happen it may annoy people living nearby.0 -

there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
