The OP didnt ask for an "emergency" appointment just one that wasnt 2 weeks away !

Needing an appointment before the need for a more serious intervention is important and not something to be dismissed as something minor like a common cold.

Well excuse me! Pregnancy is NOT an illness - as I explained my mum was actually dangerously ill - if we hadnt had that emergency appointment she could have died. Is an early stage pregnancy really more important? after all - terminations are done well into 20 weeks are they not?

It wasn't so much that she needed an emergency appointment just not one in a fortnight!

I'd have thought the later on the termination the more risk it carries for the mother..

As you also explained your mother had refused to seek medical help which led to her becoming dangerously ill.

Pregnancy is NOT an illness yet a medical proceedure such as termination needs to be at least discussed with a qualified medical practitioner and not a receptionist !

scuse me - but someone who is pregnant and wanting a termination is NOT exactly an emergency is it! I would have been furious if I had phoned the GPs for my mum last week and got the last emergency appointment - if that had been taken by someone who just wanted a termination before she started thinking she was having a baby. my mum is nearly 80 and it took us days before we got her to agree to see a doctor - and an emergency appointment was the only way we could get her there - good thing we did - she was dangerously ill!
so dont blame the receptionist too much - she obviously suspected that the appointment wasnt actually an emergency! which it wasnt was it?
I would have thought a Family Planning Clinic more suitable! as they can refer you and the GPs signature is almost automatic!

How exactly, is this helping the OP? Who the hell are you to decide who needs an emergency GP appointment or not? What if someone with depression "took the last emergency appointment from your mother" would that be considered less valid? The OP started this thread asking for help. Your snippy comments contribute nothing to this thread at all:mad: Get off your horse for God's sake.

OP as others have said, ring tomorrow, ask for an urgent appointment and if the receptionist asks what it's for tell her it's personal. Alternative try you local CASH clinic (contraception and sexual health-you should be able to Google it) or if the only appointment at your surgery is with a nurse- take it and tell her your situation. She'll know how to help you.
    Good luck hun xx

You have NO right to determine who is more deserving of a GP appointment than others. If your mother was indeed at death's door maybe you should have taken her to hospital. Try looking outside your own little bubble for once, people are affected by different things all the time in different ways, the fact that YOU think they aren't important enough to take precedent over others is irrelevant. How on earth do you know what the receptionist was thinking?
A GP receptionist is trying to effectively manage the clinic but has no medical qualification to triage over the phone. If nurse triage is all that is offered that day, the OP should take it and I'd bet an appointment would be opened up for her within the next 48 hours as per the NHS plan.

I dont know how typical this is of your surgery, but I've heard in the past of anti abortion GPs or support staff delaying women who want terminations through various methods until they pass the legal upper limit. Wait two weeks for a consultation, then take another two weeks to think about it, then push back the appointment another two weeks....

That's BS and you know it. The OP didn't reveal to the receptionist why she needed to be seen.

I'm afraid you're wrong - the issue is much more widespread in the US but there have been several high profile cases involving pro-life activists who have 'infiltrated' abortion clinics into positions of 'power' ie reception and purposely mislead and delayed women from having abortions until it was too late.

There are even cases of 'bogus' abortion clinics set up by pro-life activists which have no intention of ever giving a woman an abortion - they simply stall her with 'councilling' and 'oh the doctor is out sick today, come back in two weeks' type tactics.

Sorry to thread-hijack, back on topic!

Link please to incidents of this in the UK with NHS GP surgeries during the last 5 years? And I repeat- the OP did NOT disclose the reason she required a GP appointment:wall:

I agree that that is a total red herring as she didn't disclose the reason for an appointment
