it's simply that during the transfer and registration for new security details the site experienced an outage, leaving people part way between old and new.
That in itself would indicate software that's not fit for purpose, and we live in fear of the next outage. But actually it's a lot more than that. Mostly it's bad software. There are many design faults and many many many bugs.

I myself didn't touch the site until Wednesday, so I was completely unaffected by the outage on Monday. But I still got locked out straight away. And not because I was doing anything odd at this end.

Actually I don't think it's even clear that Monday morning's outage really was the cause of any problems.

Two-thirds of Tesco Bank customers who were locked out of their accounts throughout last week have now logged back in online, the bank says.
Some 1,650 of the 2,500 who were excluded owing to technical issues are now back in the system.
The remainder had been contacted and should be able to access their accounts using the information sent to them, a spokesman said.
So Tesco effectively says to the media today that almost none of its customers were affected in migration process - really?

Trying to log in this morning and once again my computer isn't being recognised. Worst of all I can't even get it to send the code to my mobile and get a 'OTA General Error'. Anyone else having this same problem?

    Seriously considering closing my account.

Yes same problem. When I 'hide' my computer's identity I get the same 'OTA general error it's our fault not yours' message whereas previously got texted the access code.

Can log in normally when I don't hide my computer's identity, but you obviously don't have that luxury option.

Snowman - when you say 'hide' your computer, what do you mean?

I've had issues when running Flash Block extension on Chrome, however I was able to easily fix it by adding tescobank.com to the whitelist.

While I hate flash with a vengeance, I understand the need for it so that security works on my banking site so I guess it's a necessary evil.
  • I've spent loads of time looking at the Tesco Bank online banking authentication pages and I'm pretty sure they are using something called an ArcotID

Google for ArcotID and have a look at the technology behind it - it's actually pretty cool as far as I can tell!

Based upon my limited knowledge of this it looks like being able to move the flash file from one PC to another makes no difference to the security of the system.

I've got a card reader for my Nationwide account and it's a royal pain in the @r$e to be honest!

I'm not a huge fan of Tesco (the supermarket giant) but I do think that this approach to online banking security is pretty innovative.

It's always a trade off between security and convenience and I think Tesco Bank have got it right (when you can login that is!!! although I don't think thats to do with security more likely their systems not coping with the volume of people!!!)

If it allows a new computer to be recognised as a regular computer without further ado, as reported by theoderic, then clearly the intention is being defeated.

Still can't even create my new ID. It will not accept any of the combinations I've put in.
    Any ideas?
FP did not work transferring from my Nationwide Accnt.
    Thanks

I'm starting to get really annoyed with Tesco now. I just tried to set up another linked account, and got the message:

Sorry, we couldn't confirm that you're the owner of the account you're trying to add. Please send an original Bank Statement from that account to the address shown so that we can add your account for you -
Tesco Bank, Broadway 1, 199 Renfield Street, Glasgow, G2 3AX

it's an online account, which I have very recently opened, for which I don't have any paper documentation.

Since I only want to transfer from Tesco to this external account, am I likely to have better luck by adding it as a 'Linked third party' (despite it not really being third party) rather than as a 'Linked account'?

To answer my own question, yes it does work if you set it up as 'Linked third party'.
