The butter does give a lovely taste to a cake as well. I had a slice of the coconut/orange cake with a cup of tea today - it was delicious. A tried and tested recipe from the 1980s.
Thanks florenceem I use butter swell but find it quite expensive if making a few things but hey ho will keep using butter, kids love making cakes etc.
Thanks again for kind words everyone, it does mean a lot xx.0 -
Homemade marmalade on toast for breakfast and homemade banana milkshake for lunch as I needed to use up some very over ripe bananas.
Fair bit of freezer stock used for dinner. I had a veggie burger, onion rings and spring rolls and OH had yorkshire puddings, the last of the chips, the last of the chicken nuggets and the last bit corn on the cob. Bit of a mish mash but tasty nonethelessAlso got a steak out of the freezer for OH's dinner tomorrow.
Nothing spent on food today, just diesel for the car.0 -
Kirri Asparagus pea, very pretty wouldn't disgrace a flower border, try them under sweetcorn. Taste neither pea like or asparagus like but pick them small. White beetroot -yes sweet. Try yellowstone carrots, big carrots or sugar snax very sweet. To save space I have grown climbing French beans up sweetcorn.
Never had luck with potatoes, always got blight, my brassicas always had caterpillars, never fancied eating them after picking them off. Never used pesticides.0 -
Kirri why don't we grow white asparagus? and white beetroot, I haven't tried those, I do like baby sweetcorn, so that's good, me sharing your allotment and helping you eat the stuff was a great idea, glad we only live a short train ride away
On a.worse.note, I barely have any cooking facilities, another hob on the.cooker blew, so down to 2 hobs, all the.kitchen sockets have.been disconnected,.the.good thing is, the freezer is practically empty, not much at all, cant wait until the kitchen is finally fitted.Lose 28lb 3/28lb

Interesting, will look out for the asparagus pea seeds, been going through a seed catalogue tonight.. I tried growing french beans up sweetcorn with squashes on the ground amongst it all, like the Native Americans (?) and it was a right tangled mess :rotfl: Potatoes have been fairly good, tried normal and blight resistant but tomatoes been wiped out last couple of years though parents had some in the greenhouse too but even they were poor last year with the lack of bees around. Admittedly I had a lot of caterpillars on the broccoli and they are difficult to get off.. I don't use any pesticides, I honestly don't know how the organic commercial growers do it, so much of my stuff gets ruined.
Just seen samphire and marrowfat/mushy peas in the catalogue - they could be useful stored as dried. Never eaten one though. Has anyone tried them??ms_night_ryder wrote: »Kirri why don't we grow white asparagus? and white beetroot, I haven't tried those, I do like baby sweetcorn, so that's good, me sharing your allotment and helping you eat the stuff was a great idea, glad we only live a short train ride away

If it's a hot summer it takes a couple of hours to water if a hose ban, a few hours to pick and a couple of hours to hoe/weed, will remember your offer to help lol! No idea how they grow white asparagus, in the dark??!! I am overloaded some years, dropped about 50 cucumbers off to the local g/pig rescue centre in one go before.. apart from last year I could feed you and most of the thread
Kitchen sounds a nightmare, you got some dodgy electrician in ruining your hob??!! - I have a week of that coming up soon, got to plan things I can eat without cooking.0 -
Hi again guys,
Have been absent for a while as my back problem got really bad and ended up with a hospital visit and a ton of new medication.
On the plus side, I haven't been able to get out and spend so pretty much every meal has been from stores or the freezer!
Will need to go shopping today for some packup stuff for my daughter (we are trying to eliminate food groups that are giving her stomach problems so I am taking her off hot dinners so I can monitor EVERYTHING she eats and try to find a common denominator in what makes her ill) and some fresh fruit, veg, milk and bread but that's all as we still have a ton of stuff in the cupboards and freezer.
My best wishes to those of you who are going through tough, sad or worrying times at the moment.

Thanks for the welcome everyone
Just tryin - i'm sorry to hear about your neighbour. I hope things work out as best as they can for yourself and your family.
Today was a complete NSD. I normally meet my friends for brunch on a Saturday, its my one treat a week and usually I just go for porridge and tea so its not expensive. However one of the guys paid for us all cheekily so that was free.
Lunch was an omlette with turkey and dinner was grilled chicken and steamed veg.
I'm have to plan in advance including snacks because of my intolerance to wheat, gluten and dairy.
Today is:
Breakfast - fruit with alpro soya yoghurt
Lunch - tofu scramble with frozen veg
Dinner - grilled chicken and frozen veg
Snackwise, as it is a non training day I will only have them if i'm hungry. Normally I will add in two snacks to up my calories but I have a breadbin of nuts and seeds so if I need anything that will be it.0 -
Morning all.
gailey - the olive oil was from Home Bargains. They also do a 500ml bottle for £1.29 - Sun Grown label I think. The onions you mentioned on another thread for 39p kilo from Farmfoods are good value. Are they that price all the time??
I am doing well, but again my spends are only on food and hot and cold drinks and do NOT include household/toiletry items etc. But it is low as I'm using "stash" and will be low until the end of April.
Breakfast today, toasted hot cross bun loaf for myself and Special K Red Berries for hubby. He rates the Alpro almond milk higher than the Blue Diamond one and likes the taste of the Alpro hazelnut milk even more. As long as it's approx £1 per litre he can have some.
Pasta bake later and snack the rest I think.
I'll probably try Sainsbury's later for reduced fruit and veg if passing.
zafiro1984 - I have some steak and kidney in the freezer, so perhaps a pie later in the week. Thanks for reminding me.
A few things I want rid of from the freezer this week and next weekend I'll do a good sort out.
Meals plans for the week include a stir fry, naan bread pizzas and hopefully that steak and kidney pie. Maybe a pork casserole if I can find cheap swede or perhaps a cottage pie.
Wishes to those suffering - take care.
