I'm sorry about your nan :( I hope she defies the doctors and pulls through.

And I'm very sorry for your friends loss :( I can't imagine how awful that must be.

katskorner - sorry about your Nan :( It is never easy.

Thinking about the challenge - I think the thread makes us all aware of what we're buying more. It definitely helps me. I've managed to clear a myriad of random items from my freezer and either eat it or make meals from it to freeze so it isn't sitting there for months on end. I know we all love the YS items but as long as it saves money in the long term that is OK by me :D I do like the idea of a challenge like you suggest Lynsey!

I was armed to go to Tesco with a voucher off a £50 spend last night despite not needing £50 worth of stuff (those darned vouchers!)...but decided to be sensible and go to Aldi for lunch items - came out £14 poorer but much richer than if I had gone to Tesco. I think because there is no branded food/special offers in Aldi (apart from Super 6 etc) it is easier to go in for just what I want and come out again. Must remember this! Plus the fresh fruit and veg and salad is much nicer than Tesco.

Also had a Costco run for detergent and dishwasher tablets which I haven't updated my signature. The tablets will last me until December (and beyond probably) so not too bad.

    Morning.
Kat, I am sorry to hear about your Nan. x

Burgers and burger buns have come out today. It is a change to the meal plan but my son has invited friends for a sleep over night. Doughnuts will also be coming out. I will pull out a few frozen bananas to make in to milkshakes for them to drink. Really unhealthy and the parents may want to kill me but my son will be pleased. :)

No shopping today so nothing should go in.

    Morning all.

katskorner - my thoughts are with you - God bless at this time.
Great meat bargains again - well done.

Welcome to newbies - good luck, hope you do very well.

Spent £1.73 in Sainsbury's last night and bought:
    2 x veg pizzas @ 69p each = £1.38
Pack of small sausage rolls = 35p (very dry and not nice!!).
    Total for yesterday = £2.03

Just toast again with my coffee and stir fry later, MIL may turn up, so we'll make her lunch.

Hubby lost/misplaced his credit card sometime yesterday, so frantically called to get it blocked!!!
    Luckily it hasn't been used.

ammonite - my thinking regarding the challenge with a budget was that I wouldn't be stuck for food options by just ticking over. However I went slightly OTT searching for "whoopsies", that my "stash" has virtually been unchanged. The main importance this year is the budget though.
A budget definitely makes you think and earlier in the year it was discussed with kirri how we buy and eat more than what we think we need. I very rarely have 3 meals a day, usually just the 1 main meal per day, sometimes 2 courses, but never 3 courses now.
A budget also stops you buying certain things. I would love to buy a tin of corned beef, but NOT at £2'ish per tin - I can get much better value for £2 (Lidl half-price weekend offers for example). A budget determines what you buy, though what "whoopsies" are available is also a major factor. Food buying can be a great area for savings if you can be committed and have the time.

I was thinking of doing a £10 week challenge and should be easy really as just basics needed - even 1 £10 per week challenge per month - maybe next year. That's £10 just for 2 of us.

EDIT: Just put the sultana scones in at last!!!!

  • Afternoon all :)

KatsKorner - sending lots of hugs your way

We're having a day at home today, the kids are back and forth between next doors garden and ours, in and out of both houses. I'm catching up on housework and have done some baking using up store cupboard stocks to keep the hungry hordes fed :)

I've made 2 dozen fairy cakes which DD1 and her friend next door have decorated and 16 smartie cookies using up the last pack of smarties from easter (yes we still have easter eggs!). Dinner for everyone has been toasties with cheese & ham/cheese & beans,DH is working from home today too.

Tonight's tea will be ys chicken kievs, hm pasta salad and potato salad my mam gave me as she made too much, coleslaw and i was going to serve with the leftover baby potatoes from last night but DH has eaten them all so i'm going to do some jackets instead.

Still haven't got round to doing an inventory of the freezer and cupboards :o but it's on my to-do list for today :)

    Take care all

    K xx
