  • Recovering Spendaholic - I'd use everything if it's still in sealed tins/jars. I ignore best before dates & just go by look, smell & taste to check if it's ok to eat.

I took tinned hot dogs & rolls (out of freezer) to work for lunch today with enough left over for tomorrow.

Tonight I finished a homemade lasagne that I lifted out of the freezer the other day. Unfortunately the reduced salad I bought the other day had gone off today so I ended up having a couple of rolls I lifted out of the freezer this morning. I also lifted some smoked salmon out of the freezer to make sandwiches for lunch on Wed. It's crazy I'm getting quite excited about that lunch!

I can't wait until Fri as it's payday so am looking forward to a massive shop. I've only budgeted £50 for my food/toiletries/cleaning stuff for Sep so I'm going to have to find a way to make it stretch. I don't really need to buy much as I still have quite a bit in but I want to do some batch cooking so I've got some ready meals.

I can't wait to do a food shop next week. I am looking forward to it so much!

  • i like the idea of eating what is in the cupboard and freezer, i plan to stock up and see how long it lasts me.
what do people recommended i stock up on. i normally have pasta, rice, tinned stuff like tuna, salmon soups and beans.
my other experiment is no toileteries, i am stocking on soaps, toilet tissue, washing up liquds, soap powder etc.
any suggestions who is selling the cheapest bargains:T

lifted some lamb out of the freezer for tonight's tea and having veg from the garden with it, and some yorkshire puddings.
Also got some chicken breasts out to marinade for tomorrow. Not long til its time to go shopping!!
Bread maker will be going on shortly and I intend to bake some cakes, and use up some more store cupboard ingredients. Might also make some of Twinks hobnobs too! :D

  • ~Ooh! Twinks hobnobs - haven't made them for ages. I have some four grain porridge that I bought in Waitrose on offer ages ago which no-one likes so I might use that. I haven't got any syrup though, wonder if honey would work?

I am going out to lunch today with my sister (her treat!) and tonight I am making a curry out of defrosted chicken breasts. I was going to make it last night but my sister asked if I would make corned beef hash, so I did - I made it using Sainsburys basics mashed potatoes and put loads of onion in and you couldn't tell that it was made with instant mash. The corned beef was only £1.35 in aldi and the potatoes were 19p so a cheap meal for under £2 which fed three of us with leftover corned beef for sandwiches.

My cupboards are looking about half full right now, which always sets off panic in me - I have an irrational fear of empty cupboards - I think it is inherited. One time a few years ago it was really cold with snow and ice and I saw my elderly Aunt struggling along the road - I asked her where she was going on such a day and she said that she had looked and didn't have a tin of sardines in the cupboard - mad!!!

i bought loads of reduced bread in tesco last night so that should last us, also bought a bag of spuds gonna get milk tomorrow (it's 69p in lidl thats why i didn't get it last night) then i should eb able to avoid the shops for a few days

we had spag bol last night, this morning we had toast and oranges, the kids had sandwichs for lunch with the last of the defrosted bread so i just had a packet of value noodles i've acually never had them before other than a bite when we first bought them to make sure they were nice enough to acually give to the kids, but i threw some sweetcorn and soy sauce in and it was a lovely lunch and prob cost about 13p :) dinner tonight is fishfingers chips and beans cause i have an open tin of beans to use up, tomorrow were having baked taties and spag bol topped with cheese, and thur is sherperds pie from the freezer so doing well with using stuff up :)

tesco have b1g2f on branstons beans however i've stocked up so much last time i still have a good 20+tins :o if that isn't a sign i take stocking up too far then i don't know wat is lol and i had a look and i still have 3 heinz fridge packs from dtd days aswell as 2 of the wee snappots from back then aswell

  • I have been reading this board for the past week and im totally inspired!:) Iv made a list of everything in my cupboards/fridge/freezer and realised I must have hundreds of pounds worth of food just waiting to be eaten.

I also realise that even though I like a bargain every now and then Im spending too much money on full price items!

So thanx everyone for all the tips and I'll let you know how i get on.

These are best before dates notuse up. As long as the tins are sound I would use them.

I had a tin of smartprice potatoes the other day from 2008 and though looked a bit mushy they were fine in a stew. Also used up
tin of tuna 2008 was absolutely fine.
