blackandwhitebunny - too hot for us that time of year, but enjoy ......... you've "saved" enough for it. ;)

Florenceem - why is your May spends up on previous months alraedy??
Are you just re-stocking?? Very low previous spends though, very impressive.

quintwins - that would be my months budget spent in a single day. lol
We used to bulk buy meat, buy half a pig or a lamb or a whole steak piece. Well done on avoiding the takeaways.

cheerfulness4 - I'm desperately short on chocolate, that short I have none!! No fudge either!! Maybe treat myself this week. Fudge from Lidl and see if there are any great chocolate bargains out there.

Food buying this week - I'm trying to be frugal as nothing really needed. A "whoopsie" shortage would be welcomed to avoid temptation, but see what comes up.
Potatoes will be needed towards the end of the week and if nothing reduced in Sainsbury's the next few days, then Aldi for the Maris Piper. I buy my gravy granules there, so get a couple of cartons.

I had really low spends as I had stocks of things. :D For instance - I had not bought toilet rolls since September - ran out so had to restock. :( Same happened with rubber gloves, bleach, toilet blocks - can't remember what else. :(

Wow quintwins you did really well there..

cheerfulness4 90% cocoa chocolate does fall into my trolley occasionally too :) along with Rodda clotted cream which I eat with a spoon

florenceem most everyone eats too many carbs and it's not our fault as we were told fat is the enemy and now there are more and more studies showing fat isn't that bad.

Sugar (sucrose) is not good but fructose is really bad. In nature an orange comes with fibre so you don't absorb it so much from your stomach. Orange juice is all fructose no fibre. When people with diabetes get dangerous low sugar (because of drugs) hospitals give us OJ it's virtually an instant sugar rush.

Carbs turn to glucose which would be fine if we burned it all off but we eat too much of them and carbs (unlike fat) turn to fat. In America they are saying 6 tsps of sugar and the equivalent of six slices of wholegrain bread are probably OK if you're healthy, not fat. That's including the sugar in soup, ketchup, bread etc.

I thought soya was healthy too..not for everyone..

Anyway thinking about the diabetes epidemic is making me gloomy..
Thanks for the info - long time since I did food science at school - not that we did much of it back then. :) We mainly cooked each week, learnt how to wash up/clean an oven and iron a hankie! :rotfl:
Can I ask you to take a look at my dinner this evening and give your opinion on it's food balance please - promise not to get mad at you! :D

We had roast pork, roast potatoes & parsnip, gravy with purple sprouting broccoli, carrot and green beans. I only give the roasting pan a quick spray with organic rapeseed oil to cook pots/parsnip.

Florenceem...as I don't know you personally so don't know if you have any insulin resistance symptoms or need to lose weight I'll be general here.

Step 1. Reduce the empty calorie carbs such as sugar, soft drinks, fruit juices (eat the fruit or smoothie it yourself to get the fibre too) white flour eg cakes, biscuits, packet sauces and cornflour eg custard powder. If you like it you could use whole wheat/meal/grain instead.

Step 2. Reduce the white bread, pasta, rice or choose the brown variety instead.

See how that goes for you, for some people it's enough. If it's not then what you do is whittle away at the amount of starches and sugars.

To be healthy it's important to keep as many veg and fruit in your diet as you can and leave tinkering with them till the last. If you ate no carbs from things like bread, rice, pasta you can be perfectly healthy as your body can make glucose. But it can't make every single nutrient you need from fruit and veg.

Your plate.. it's fine if you're the average healthy person. If you need to lose weight or have history of diabetes in family or have some insulin resistance symptoms then I'd say up the above the ground veg and reduce the root veg and not have packet gravy or sauces.

    The pork looks scrumptious !

    Hope that helps.

The pate looks fine, as it's all healthy stuff. The only thing I would say though is that there is rather a lot on the plate - not a problem in this case as your meal is well-balnaced with plenty of veg, but it would be if it were a plate of spaghetti for example.

I suggest that anyone with any questions about reducing carbs or sugar heads over to ask on the low carb support thread in Health & Relationships, which can be found in the Home & Play section. Loads of people on there can help.

My OH went to the pub for a pint or three of carbs and made me a salad for dinner with rollmops - hadn't had those in ages. Lidl ones are better than ASDA but the Lidl lids sometimes leak a bit when sideways in shopping. :(

We've got special offer Sainsbos diced turkey and ASDA diced lamb out of freezer for our first attempt at real proper with all the spices and stuff curry tomorrow. I can't eat rice so I will be having fake rice made from cauliflower ..can't wait zzzzzzz

Morning to a Bank Holiday Monday - no rain as yet, but cloudy today.

Florenceem - you include toiletries in your budget?? Fantastic spend then and I need to come and stay with you for a few weeks to get trained up. lol

Simple jam on toast today for breakfast, pork dinner later and some gammon ham to finish off.

Normal Monday's shopping for Brother is put back until tomorrow, so only Sainsbury's to visit later. I'll buy a couple of bags of milk (if still 2 for £1) and see what's reduced.
