Listening to a BBC Radio Five Live report on sugar in fruit juices.. fruit is just vitamin C with sugar in natural state and an apple contains 3 tsps sugar.. a serving of fruit juice contains 18 teaspoons of sugar !!

Evidently 5 a day was a marketing campaign started in California in 1991 to sell fruit and veg and never should have been adopted as a misleading health mantra..

Re your OH's family members, I have a pet in pre diabetes state and vet has even advised to cut out sweet veg let alone fruit! I guess for us humans though, best to have in moderation, I've upped my fruit this week but it's better than what I could be eating I suppose!! Maybe with the drinks your OH gets through it might be better to go onto water than as half a litre is quite a lot! Wonder what the difference between fresh ie from a juicer and concentrates is, if any? shop bought concentrates always tastes very sweet..

Was an interesting reader comment on one of the stories about 95% of products in a supermarket being unnecessary and buying single items foods, not sure what the real figure is for basic ingredients but I do agree and I don't look at most aisles - but feel I could improve my shopping further and save more money/have healthier options.

For lunch I've had a houmous pitta with greek salad, was lovely!

I've given away a kilo ish of choc today (still got loads). Feel like I am retraining my tastebuds with fruit!

Lynsey, good news about your loaf! I want to try another loaf with oats in. Also want to try making it all by hand and with fresh yeast and also learn sourdough! I find the malted flours the tastiest, mixed in with some white.

Check out the coupon thread, possibly free Palmolive hand-wash, even paid to take it away - save the pdf coupon to re-use if any good to you.

Thanks for this Lynsey, just been to try it and there is a message on the site saying that there was a problem with the voucher and retailers would no longer be accepting it- hope you managed to get one first!!

Hello from a long time lurker, but new to posting on here.

I'd like to that you all for inspiring me to actually cook and eat the things we have rather than cramming my freezers full and then not using it! This thread, combined with my partner actually being here during the week after his contract ended 100 miles away, means i've made serious headway into stocks :j

I would also like to say to Florenceem that I am an M.E sufferer too, having contracted it after a bout of glandular fever when I was 12 (22 years ago) so I fully sympathise.

Anyway, bread is nearly proved and then will be put in the oven (Aldi crusty wholemeal bread mix, 57p a pack iirc) then it will be burgers and chips for dinner (no high class dining here, well my OH is a fishfinger sandwich addict! and a very fussy eater) so I best get on!

    Thanks again all :T

I too am an M E suffererer - looks like there are a few of us on here - I resent the time that I sleep - feel like its such a waste of my life and there is sooooo much that I could be doing..... still, I'm hoping that one day I WILL be able to do all the things that I think about.....

    I've been Money Tipped!
AngelC = welcome to both MSE and this thread, good luck.

AlwaysHappy - what a nightmare with the coupon then!! Haven't tried to use any and looks like I can't, what a shame. Another one bites the dust, hope some managed to get some "freebies".

NSD again, but had a look and nothing worthwhile, there was some salmon fillets reduced, but not reduced enough to take.
81p spent in 3 days, makes up a bit for Saturday.

Sausages out for breakfast tomorrow, shepherds pie and not too sure what else.

Need to book a Groupon for Thursday, saves a meal.

Hope all with ailments are feeling better tonight.

Well I had a lovely tea. Asda's ES Milanese Chicken with Ciabatta breadcrumbs, cooked in a herby butter and served with a warm salsa, roast spuds, courgettes, onion and cherry toms roasted in the oven. LUSH! Doubt I'll be able to afford it full price tho lol, but may treat myself once in a while on payday! :D Have a few left over roast spuds which I'm going to save to do a frittata. Lunch I had a bacon sarnie.

Spent a fair bit in Asda today on salad and other things. Think I'll have to arrange to go shopping without ds as I always get nagged for something! Generally those yoghurt drinks. Managed to get one palmolive handwash, and looks like it'll be the last. :(

Lynsey has inspired my to cook garlic prawns tomorrow for lunch with a baby spinach, rocket and watercress salad. Will probably make a lemony dressing with it. Tomorrow should be a nsd as I'm not going out.

Sorry to hear about you guys suffering from ME. Must make things difficult for you.

Edit - sorry AngelC - forgot to say an 'ello. :)
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Jane - Asda are supposed to be doing Branston beans for £1 for 4 tins.

Lip_Stick - garlic prawns are lovely, I prefer the Sainsbury's giant prawns (frozen), but even at half-price they are £2.50 per bag!!

Wonder what the difference between fresh ie from a juicer and concentrates is, if any? shop bought concentrates always tastes very sweet..

If you look at the ingredients they often include grape juice or even deflavoured grape juice, manufacturers add this to other juices as grapes have one of the highest sugar contents so it makes them sweeter but they can still claim 100% natural juice. Having said that though, fruit juice is always better than colas as it contains various vitamins and minerals.
Also remember dogs are not the same as humans and process glucose and sugars differently. No-one who is not actually diabetic needs to worry about the sugar content of fruit. Put another way - if fruit is the main source of sugar in your diet its highly unlikely that you could ever consume enough to affect your pancreas. There is also research coming out that identifies white, refined carbohydrates as one of the biggest diet risks for diabetes.
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

You'll find grape juice used to sweeten hemp milk too blackandwhitebunny

I can eat a few grapes or cherries at a time with no effect but blueberries or parsnips and it's like I'm drunk and not in a good way :(

    Hello AngelC and welcome.

Lynsey we buy wild North Atlantic shell-on prawns cooked and frozen at sea from a wholesaler £6 per kilo. Very cheap when compared to the horrible shelled farmed stuff that tastes vaguely of bleach. Tesco Indonesian prawns are the worst eww

((( Florenceem and AlwaysHappy))) hope you recover real soon !

    Lip_Stick definitely lush !
