I would not do anything at all, resign, or look for new jobs, until you have seen both a doctor and occupational health.

As long as you are getting help and sticking with it from what I understand SS will be fine.

You seem to be avoiding making a doctor's appointment again though. Pick up the damn phone!!!!

My wife had alcohol problems for years and kept it very much to herself, to the point where she ended up refusing to see any doctor for the last three years.

In her mind it was everyone else that had the problem not her.

She died in January this year aged 43 years.

Like the previous poster said. Pick up the phone!!

If I don't resign though and am dismissed that's going to prove a greater problem in obtaining a new job in the future.

Emmzi you commented earlier on considering mitigation when alcoholism is involved an help is being sought, would i be best to try and ask the doctor for a lettrr to show at my hearing to prove im telling the truth about seeking help. Also out of curiosity how did you manage this going forward, did you set conditions such as continued occ health appointments, AA or similar proof of attendance etc. I'm curious as to hoe this all works.

    .

Not if your reference says resigned pending investigation into gross misconduct - or words to that effect. Which tanslates as "did it, guilty as sin, ran away". That really isn't any improvement on sacked, is it?

AA isn't neccessary as it isn't for everyone. GP can for example give you drugs so you vomit if you drink, that kind of thing.

I've done reduced hours ramping back up to normal in a defined period and 4/6/8 weekly occ health appointments to monitor progress. One organisation I worked for paid for counselling for employees as well - a place where saftey was very important indeed and no risks could be taken of relapse.

PS stop fannying about on the internet and phone the bloody doctor. I don't believe you are serious and the loinger you leave it the less of a hope you have. We're throwing you a life ring and you're looking at it wondering whether to drown or paddle!

Do not resign, at least until you have discussed options with a full time officer from the union - i can assure you s/he will want a heads up if you're contemplating resignation.

All is not lost, yet, and there may be further options to consider before jumping. A compromise agreement for example could include an agreed reference ahead of your exit.

I would strongly suggest you do not resign. As SarEl has said, a reference saying "resigned whilst under investigation for X" is pretty much the same as "dismissed for X".

Whilst you remain employed there is a possibility that they may impose a lesser penalty.

If you can find any lever at all it is possible you may be able to negotiate a compromise agreement where you go quietly in exchange for an agreed reference.

Equally, the longer you remain the greater chance there is that they may mess up procedurally giving you an opening to take to a tribunal. With care you may be able to feed them some rope!

Although, from what you have said here, I don't think there is much chance of you getting more than a technical win if it went the distance at a tribunal (i.e. nominal or no compensation) fighting a claim costs the firm significant time and money which they won't get back even if they win. For this reason some firms (not all) tend to settle cases which they may well have won. Again, this gives the opportunity of a legally binding agreed reference which may well be the best you can do.

I am going to the doctors tomorrow re alcohol and also hopefully something for stress as had about 6 hours kip since Friday and 6 slices of toast.

Has anyone else got an opinion on whether the gp has to contact social services as my child resides with me and his mum. I am keen to find this out as will have to approach this with my partner before they coming calling to check eveything is ok - which it is.

Ermm - are you listening? Good you are going to the doctor - and no social services will not be informed unless there is child safety concern - but why are not not talking to your partner anyway?
