The UK's largest supermarket is recalling packs of Christmas lights because of a fault which may cause electric shocks.

Tesco is urging customers to unplug the lights and return them to stores.

Five different product lines are subject to the recall including frosted, clear and coloured lights.

In a statement, it said the move was a precautionary measure "... due to a manufacturing fault, which may cause an electric shock."

A spokeswoman for the chain would not say how many packs were thought to have been sold.

The recall was ordered after a manufacturing fault in the lights' multi-function control box was reported. It may allow wires to detach and potentially cause an electrical hazard, Tesco said.

All five product lines have been on sale since October this year. No other lights sold by the store are affected.

Tesco said it was investigating the matter with the supplier. A spokesman for the supermarket chain said: "We have had no reports of dangerous incidents with these lights, but we always put safety first.

"Customers should stop using the lights immediately, unplug them and return them to any Tesco store for a full refund or replacement."

The products subject to the recall are: Tesco 100 indoor multifunction frosted berry lights, model number 5056-36; Tesco 100 indoor multifunction clear lights, model no 5056- 06; Tesco 100 indoor multifunction coloured lights model no 5056-06; Tesco 200 indoor multifunction clear lights, model no 5056-35; Tesco 200 indoor multifunction coloured lights, model no 5056-35.
