Oh no they didn't! For months there were munitions in a dangerous state washing ashore in Scotland and Northern Ireland because the edges of the dump were disturbed. No GPS in 1946 you see ;)

Lol, well yeah, there were a few items dislodged but without incident, I really meant, no big explosion..
I would imagine that there is some doubt as to the exact whereabouts of the edges of the trench as you rightly say, due to the lack of any accurate mapping at the time.
Personally, I think they should have lanced the boil before building the gas line and blew the lot of it up with controlled explosions before starting, that would have been quite a sight..

Controlled explosions sound reasonable don't they? Until you discover that there are an unknown quantity of nuclear and chemical weapons dumped down there. No records were kept - amazingly and they kept on dumping there right up until 1976.

There is no detailed list of what is down there but here's an estimate:

29" Spigot mortar bombs; Smoke generators (Numbers 5, 8 and 14); Shrapnel mines; .303 Small arms ammunition (SAA) (incendiary); .50 Ammunition (incendiary); 3" Mortar bombs (smoke); 2" Mortar bomb (smoke); 40mm Light anti-aircraft (LAA) gun shells (Bofors); 20mm LAA shells; Percussion fuses percussion (Number 101E); Hand Grenades (Number 79: smoke); Instantaneous detonation fuses (Mk3); Rockets 'U': 3" (Type 'K': Anti-Aircraft with parachute and wire); Rockets 'U': 5" (Type 'G1': Phosgene); USAF 500lb HE bombs; RAF 9 lb bombs; RAF 500 lb cluster bombs (Number 17).
  • Hi
I agree the prices are ridiculous! We travel back and forward from scotland to belfast quite often but its a fortune!! It really eats into our hard earned pennies!!! Its actually cheaper for us to go to france or belguim than it is to go to northern ireland! Crazy:(
  • Anyone complaining about this should try their luck on the even more rip-off Isle of Wight ferry monopoly. They don't have ticket officers - they go straight for mortgage advisers.
  • Prices are crazy for the ferry!!!!

The catch being....if you took the day time journey....its about £100, but it can only be used for a night return....at £200 a leg!

That will be £350 sir......!!! Hardly worth it.

Yep, that's why I said that it might help someone 'needing to travel on the overnight ferry'. As for being 'hardly worth it', well it's definitely worth it to save £50 when, like my family, we have no option but to travel on the overnight ferry.

Have to say prices on Stena are not cheap this year. I go over to see Gretna FC 2008 a lot. Last season i got car plus 4 for day trip for 80, now it's 110. And yes, Gretna are still going.:rotfl:

Just wanted to add to this :)

Our Ferry prices are a disgrace, can go from England to France in March for £88 return!

Now that our MLA's are trying to get rid of the tax hike on NI flights, do you think anything will be done about the ferries? Reading Motorhome and Caravan sites, folks on the mainland would love to come here but don't because of the price so it has to be hitting our tourist industry hard.

Also, in an attempt for Tesco to join in I just got an email saying that while previously we could pay entire ferry fare from clubcard points, from August you are limited to paying £200 in clubcard points (which given the high prices will probably barely even get you one way!!)
Life's a box of beads - rainbow coloured and full of surprises!:D

oh fiddle, I always pay for mine with tesco vouchers.

Worth noting to to get a stena extra card (dont know where we got ours from but its a free thing!) and it gives you free stena plus seats. I think these are brilliant and used to pay 5 pounds each for them as part of a tesco deal. They dont do that anymore and the seats are much more expensive.

    Brilliant for free though!!
