Rip-off ferry prices

I have to go to GB mainland again this summer, sorta unexpected...cheapest is £248 via Stranraer (42 miles away)and £290 via Dublin (66 miles)

How can they justify these stupendous prices when the crossing from GB to France (25 miles away) can be had for £25-40 each way?

Not a happy bunny!!

  • The price of Ferries to England from Northern Ireland is terrible, I had to go to a funeral earlier this year overnight ferry was £292 return to Liverpool, I am going to have to go back again later this year - not looking forward to forking it out again, but we are trapped here,

Actually, maybe not! Isn't the competition commission or something looking in to the takeover of the Norse irish line or something because Stena will then have unrivalled dominance over the public crossing the irish sea. As for the prices, yes they are crazy high....maybe we need to start letting the commission know how the public feel about being held to ransom?

Please use the thanks button if I have helped in anyway

Maybe we should have a "No thanks" button if you have not helped in any way?

OK, you have started me on Ferry Prices - they are a total Rip Off!!!!!

We travel at least 4 times a year back and forth for business, and are now driving from Cairnryan down because it is simply the cheapest way and the best service (my Mum has a slight disability and their service is second to none for disabled travellers)

We used to travel the Liverpool/Brikenhead route regularly, but the price has almost doubled in the last two years, plus you now have to pay for your dinner and breakfast if you want it (though the food is slightly better) and pay again for an outside cabin if required - if there are 4 of you travelling this can add a further £200 on to your fare - £20 each, each way for the meals and £20 for an outside cabin each way - so be warned!

Last time I looked we could actually travel cheaper from Ireland to France than we could travel from Belfast or Dublin to Liverpool/Birkenhead

If you are travelling to London it might be worth looking at the Rosslare to Fishguard route, which can sometimes work out cheaper, although you have the long drive down to Rosslare, it is a nice drive on the other side up to London. But generally we seem to be had everyway - couriers have got a lot cheaper recently, but if we courier our stuff over and then fly across to England we have to pay through the nose for a hire car - why can I hire a car on the continent for £70 a week and pay about 4 times that if I try to hire a car in England!!!!

To finish on a positive though - if you have tesco vouchers you can still treble them up against your ferry booking, though you need to allow time for this!
DJWW - cos we won't let it!

Brilliant advice from a "Deliciously Dedicated Doubly Diehard MoneySaving Devotee" there :insert Rolley Eyes Smiley:
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
  • Ferry prices are high, and even for a foot passenger on Stena Stranraer - Belfast. I now save my Tesco clubcard points for trips to N.I. so it doesn't hurt as much. And don't get me started on CalMac ferries to Outer Hebrides - now they really are a monopoly!

Love the 'advice' from DCFC79. Having a wee troll were we?

It's about time a road link was established between Ireland (north or south) and the UK mainland, there have been plans afoot for a long time for a tunnel from Liverpool or Holyhead to Dublin by 2030 but this will most likely never happen however a tunnel or bridge could surely be practical between Northern Ireland and Scotland? There is less distance between NI and Scotland then England and France..
I suppose nothing will happen until the financial climate improves but this would certainly force the ferry companies to be more competetive just as they have to be on continental sailings.
