Holiday cottage rental disaster

Hi
My Partner and I rented a holiday cottage for a week through an internet agent and we arrived on saturday to commence our let. On sunday lunchtime we went into the kitchen to prepare food to find that fruit on the worksurface had been eaten by vermin and there were droppings on the worksurfaces in various places. We contacted the internet company by phone and received a message to say that their offices had closed at 1pm and this was past this stage. We had no internet access to search for further contact numbers for the company. We contacted the owner of the cottage who lives next door but was not at home and couldnt meet us at the cottage, they suggested that they could get their partner to lay mousetraps that evening on return from their day out. We advised them that mousetraps on a holiday let wouldnt be unacceptable and that we would leave the property as soon as we could pack up again, they made no further suggestions and we informed that we would like a full refund and that we would discuss this further with the internet agent. We had no alternative but to return home as we had our pet with us and on return we contacted the agents emergency telephone number which wasnt physically manned and left a recorded message, we also e-mailed all the details to the agent.
In the past two days the agent has been in discussion with the cottage owner and neither parties have yet committed to a refund. Our opinions have been ignored, our weeks holiday ruined and there has been no focus on attempting to compensate us for our experience.
What are my rights as both parties dont seem interested?
Thanks

Kiss goodbye to any prospect of receiving a refund from these shysters0

You have the right to take legal action against the other parties in the small claims court in order to recover all or part of the money you paid on the grounds that they failed to deliver holiday accomodation of an acceptable standard.
Mind you, down at the Dog and Duck I expect that the regulars have had a good chortle over the townies who did a runner at the first sight of a mouse.0 -
Did you take pictures?
*wonders if it's the same cottage company that mis-sold a holiday to her this year*0 -

Yes photos taken of the evidence! Could be same company or there could be several gangsters on the net!0

I'd have wiped down the surfaces with a 10% bleach 90% water solution (5 minutes work)
then enjoyed my stay. Mice are great fun and I would have loved the mousetrap idea and seeing how many I could catch. Kit kat is the best bait on the trap by the way, they cant resist, BANG.
And if you had not left food on the worktops the mice may have stayed away !0 -

is the right answer, it seems to me that there was a teensy bit of over reaction in the OP and if I owned the holiday let I wouldn't be giving a refund either0 -

Kit Kat eh? I've usually just gone for simple chocolate, but I would say that those plastic snap traps are much better than the 'little nipper' type - gets the little bs every time.martinthebandit wrote: »... it seems to me that there was a teensy bit of over reaction in the OP and if I owned the holiday let I wouldn't be giving a refund either
Well if it had been me and the owner had popped round with some traps, an apology, and a bottle of wine, I'd have been perfectly happy. If the OP feels sufficiently aggrieved at the lack of a refund, they can of course go legal. What view a court would take of the matter I do not know, but I think they should consider the possibility that they might be disappointed.0 -
