Im sure that the majority of the posters will be pleased to hear that I will not receive a refund. I did not follow protocol as I did not contact not the emergency telephone line as I did not have it in my possession as I didnt have internet access and although I contacted the number on my return home to an unmanned telephone line this was still not acceptable. They didnt have time to resolve the issue.

    A good result!!!!!!!!!!
OP, you need to stop being a drama queen and accept that, although a bit of a surprise, finding mice in a cottage is no big deal. People have been sharing their homes with mice for millenia! I'm sorry, but I do not believe you live on a farm and yet have this reaction. I suspect a troll.

Leaving aside whether I'd have reacted the same as you to the mouse issue in the first place, I wouldn't be satisfied with that as a response. I assume you have been dealing with the holiday rental co over the phone so far? I would write a letter of complaint stating that you are dissatisfied and repeating your request for a refund. This might get a better result, perhaps.

The let started on Saturday and the droppings weren't noticed on the worktops until Sunday and the rodents were obviously attracted to the food left out. If previous holiday makers hadn't left food out then the problem wouldn't have been noticed and therefore the agents and owners wouldn't have been aware of the problem. As soon as they became aware of the problem traps were offered to be placed the same evening which I find to be a realistic initial response to the problem.

OP should have given the owners the chance to fix the problem and continue the holiday and simply not leave food out. A big overeaction I'm afraid. We've had lizards in a hotel in Turkey and frogs in a house let in Florida, we ignored them and they ignored us and the holidays were great. In Florida we also didn't have hot water for two days until they could fix it, no biggie nothing will ever be perfect.
    It's someone else's fault.
  • there does seem to be a lot of unnecessary slagging off and snide remarks made on this thread. The poster was genuinely concerned enough to act in the way she did. Whether she's right or wrong shouldn't be the focus of sad individuals who feel a right to attack her for her actions and opinions.

This forum exists to ask advice, and canvass opinion.

People have not 'slagged off' they have given their opinion to the OP, that they are over reacting and do not deserve a refund. They have had pointed out the probable cause, and that they were offered a normal, reasonable solution to the problem, but chose to leave instead.

As the previous poster has stated, how many times have you been on holiday and had geckos on your ceiling, frogs on your balcony, the odd cockroach. It really is no big deal unless you live in a sanitised, antiseptic, artificial bubble.

I really do wonder what the majority of posters do with their remaining time when the are not on this website? Did I want to stay in a cottage with mice, no! It didnt seem to be on the cottages description. Yes I have put my concern into writing and received a reply. If anyone has anything constructive and helpful, feel free to post it. To the remainder - sarcasm is the lowest form of wit! Go holiday with your lizards/frogs/mice, whatever you choose. Some of us pay for a high standard level, maybe the remainder just dont pay the same?

Have you considered camping. Its great. My tent was £80 and it'll last for approx 180 days use before ultra violet light in the suns rays damage it beyond use. Very mse. Right back to nature in a tent Jo C. Marvellous.

Joanne, although no one wants uninvited "guests" in their holiday accom, the vast majority would make some attempt to get the problem sorted rather than just pack up and go home. Most of us have had mice, ants, fleas, earwigs etc invading our homes, but we didn't just move somewhere else, we dealt with it.

Had the cottage owners not made any attempt to deal with the mice, I think you may have had grounds for a partial refund. But you made the choice not to allow the owners time to resolve the situation, therefore you cannot expect them to refund you anything. Your action in leaving food out could also be seen as a contributory cause of the problem.
