I have been to a meeting when AGEUK came to give us a talk and they said that they would help to complete the form. Later they said that they do not provide assistance or representation for the appeal. They do not do any fighting for the benefit.
I find that very strange. Where I live we were given every assistance at every stage we needed to go through - AND they said if we needed to go to a tribunal (we didn't:) ) they would point us in the direction of someone who could go with us. Perhaps if you visit a different branch of Age UK?
  • Fortate, I was initially turned down. I had filled in the DLA form myself, and thought it was good enough, but I took a copy to the CAB after my rejection letter, and they said it was nowhere near strong enough. They helped me fill in an appeal form, and we sent it off, together with a letter from my consultant saying that my heart function is severely impaired. I use a wheelchair out of doors, and sometimes indoors as well.

Two weeks later I got an acceptance letter - HRC and HRM, indefinite award, and saying I did not need to go to tribunal

I would advise you to get as much medical evidence as you can to support your claim, and ask AGEUK to help you with the form. They might accept you straight away - nowhere near everyone is turned down. If they do turn you down, then appeal, and get a friend to go with you to the tribunal. I'm told it's quite straightforward, and 60% of people get an award at this stage.

It's definitely worth trying - the money and motability car have made a huge difference to the quality of my life, and I can go to my hospital appointments (every couple of weeks) without having to change buses several times in a wheelchair - not an easy task!
