Am I missing the point here? You work weekends. Most courts only operate Mon-Fri. Employers have to give you time off to do jury service, and if it did interfere with work you can claim loss of earnings. You also get your travel paid.

I have to do jury service in July. That for me potentially means 2 weeks, maybe more, maybe less, where I can't be available for interviews as I am currently unemployed. It has also meant I've had to turn down the only job offer I had all year as I can't make the only week of training to do a temporary summer job so have missed out, and they wouldn't defer jury service for me. So excuse me if I fail to see what your problem is.

Personally I cant see what you are moaning about.

Jury duty is all about sitting down all day long in a room full of others in the same situation as you. You have to work two days at the weekend....so what ? big deal, you've been sat around all week doing next to !!!!!! all and you are moaning that you wont have time off ! sheesh !

Quite a lot of the time jurers actually get to go home early anyhow if the court gets ajourned.

When I used to work at the Crown Court jurers were nearly always gone by 3 - 3.30 they didnt start till gone 10 and had at least an hour for lunch.

Sometimes jurors actually have to sit in a trial! A woman at my last job was called and while we were all expecting she'd have a boring week and be back before we knew it she ended up on a long drawn out trial involving a violent sexual assault case.

It was very draining, both physically and emotionally and of course our boss didn't expect her to do her usual evening work, he's a human being with feelings and a bit of kindness!

Jury duty is just one of those things, its not ideal, but its got to be done and it could be anyone next so treat your juror employees as you would treat yourself if it was you! Do you really think this boss would work 12 days straight?

I believe the Met have brought in compulsory 8 days on 2 days off shifts (which include earlies, day shifts and nights across each set of 8 days). That's tens of thousands of employees in one organisation. I'm sure they aren't alone either.

That sounds like a massive breach of WTD, I don't think that can be right, could you share your source please?

they'd probably book a days holiday rather than expecting to have it off.

commit a crime - they wont ask you again! Or tell the judge you know the defendant after end of first day.

I deferred mine once about 15 years ago (said I was self-employed and it would be too financially difficult) - have never been asked since

Op stated that annual leave is booked in advance before she knew about this. If the boss is willing to rearrange her annual leave then that would be a solution, but I got the impression that wasn't an option.

No she doesn't - her oldest looks after the youngest otherwise the simple answer would have been to state that childcare was a reason but the OP didn't want to go down that road.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Sorry OP but I'm another one in the what the hell are you moaning about camp.

Many people don't get to see their children for months on end because of their job and whilst they don't like it, they accept its a down side to having the job that they have.

And before you say it I'll say it for you - yes that doesn't mean that YOU have to like it but I hope it puts your situation into perspective.
