Why Is Gmail Not Considered A Valid Email Address?

Options
I recently got a Gmail account as I am changing ISPs and don't want the bother of having to keep updating all my accounts with new details. When I tried to put the Gmail address onto my Marks And Spencers account, it said that it wasn't a valid email account, although I have been using it for a few days now. It wouldn't accept my Yahoo email either and I've had that for years! I am currently using a 3 mobile broadband PAYG dongle, so don't have an ISP email.

Are you sure you're typing it in properly? I just used my gmail account to set up a M&S account and it worked fine...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

A lot of retailers for security reasons are now blocking new signups with free email accounts (gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc.). this is to stop spammers from spamming their systems and to stop fraud as these free emails are not traceable if anything goes wrong or the user is fraudulent.

i never said ALL retailers a said A LOT of retailers. M & S now block new signups using free email accounts due to their recent email hack they suffered.

a lot of online retailers use anti-fraud measures run by

    maxmind
    telesign
    and several others

these reject free email accounts and any account using these will be rejected until manually accepted by the retailer or left rejected

I (5 mins after the OP started this thread) set up an M&S account using my gmail address and all was fine...

I never claimed you did say all retailers, I mealy stated its not normal for most to only accept a valid ISP address. I know what you said.

  • I only thought it was yahoo and hotmail ids which were banned since gmail accounts need verification when registered.

I'm definitely spelling it right, maybe its because I'm using mobile broadband. I will try it from a fixed line and see if that works.

It may be a combination of the two - freemail and dongle.

You could be anyone and anywhere.

My Lotto account always asks me to confirm I'm in the UK when I access it with a dongle.
