Why Is Gmail Not Considered A Valid Email Address?

The rules on email syntax are here... but even so, those are only the RFC rules.. "organizations are free to restrict the forms of their own email addresses as desired, e.g., many organizations do not use certain characters (space, ?, and ^) and most organizations treat uppercase and lowercase letters as equivalent. Windows Live Hotmail, for example, only allows creation of email addresses using alphanumerics, dot (.), underscore (_) and hyphen (-)."

Can anyone remember being given an email address of full dot quad notation... such as albert@192.168.0.250 -

Does the length of time the freemail account has been in existence have any bearing in some instances?
I'm no expert, but I imagine the site you tap the address into could access that information somehow.0 -
Could OP please furnish us with the exact email format (not the real email address of course)
e.g. if your real name was Fred Bloggs, can you post this:
" My email address look like this: my.name@gmail.com "
by knowing the exact format, we can all stop speculating and tell you exactly what is wrong with the format and why M&S rejects it.0 -
My email format is firstnamelastname@gmail.com, no dots or dashes. I am currently using my old landline dial-up and M&S wouldn't accept accept the new email so it wasn't the combination the combination of a free email address and a mobile dongle.0

I log in using my old details then go to My Account and go to Change Your Personal Details and put in the new email, then when I click Save Changes the page says * Please enter valid email address * under the email address box. I tried changing the password and the site accepted the new one without any trouble. Maybe I'm just not posh enough for M&S, I didn't have this trouble with Tescos or Argos!0

Try a different browser - IE, Firefox, Chrome - if you already use one of these, try the alternatives. Also, clear your cookies. Or even try another computer.0

...Try a different browser...
That's a good tip for any web surfing.
Several times sites have refused to play ball for me in one browser, but worked OK in another.0 -
just tried it and M&S accepted my gmail account with no problems.0
