I wonder what contributed to their downfall? The rise of digital cameras and printing maybe? Though I would have thought the market for pro photo studio shoots would not be affected. Olan Mills is the only place I know for miles that does this. Where do we go now for photo shoots?

I thought that Olan Mills gave hard sell on over priced extra pictures when my dd had her photo taken there. I much prefered Pixifotos (same as Parasol) who usually do mobile shoots in Boots/Woolworths. They were always lovely pictures and dd won bonniest baby with them so I'm a bit biased.
  • In 1932 Olan Mills and his wife started a portrait studio in Alabama, USA with a vision to create beautiful, high quality portraits at very reasonable prices.

In 2006 you want tits up and lost your customers loads of !!!!!!! money

We lost our Olan Mills ages ago as the whole shopping center was knocked down. I had a voucher for them which I was going to use so I lost out then.

Mind you here in Derby I know of at least 3 photo studios in the town.

Just FYI jembie (although it's useless info now) the Derby branch moved opposite the old bus station/courthouse when Main Centre closed.

Shame for those who've lost out inc the staff, I used them a couple of years ago for my baby's pics and they were great.

We never ever got a hard sell from them, and did have some bargains beleive it or not, you could by the CD of the session for £89 with all the photos and the copyright when i last went

Pixifotos are ok but not in the same leage as Olan Mills was as they had many backgrounds and stage props etc
  • The two main people than own Olan Mills must'v known 4 ages about this. Yet they still took every1s money, & they were at the Clothes Show taking even more. mite as well of stolen our wallets! I AM NOT BLAMING INDIVIDUAL STAFF, JUST THE BIG BOSSES!

We've had different experiences then, I was very disappointed with the Olan Mills photos, I used 2 of my steps package and didn't bother going again. In my opinion Pixifotos photographers were much better with composition and lighting. At Olan Mills I would have been surprised if their photographers had any training.

I used Olan Mills for DS's christening pics and wasnt impressed. He was 6 months old and confidently sitting up but she was determind to take pics of him lying on his tummy which he hated and i told her that but she still did it. The pics then had his with a face of total disgust!!!

I much prefer Pixiphoto and have used them much more.

I had a session @ olan mills when i was pregnant, i felt it was a rip off, it was about £15 for a 7x5, and £35 for a few passport sixed ones.
I got vouchers for pixiphoto in my bounty pack and have always used them, much better value for money - 6 sets of photos for £80 and i got a giant one for £40. Plus you could pay in instalments, unlike olan mills unless you signed a credit agreement.
I found olan mills very annoying, they would phone me all the time trying to sell the watch me grow plan, even when i said i had no money they would ask when i got payed - how rude, i guess now its coz they were desperate.
