We also really enjoyed Alias, I would imagine you would be able to pick that up quite cheaply now.
My kids and I love The Middle.0 -
I can't believe nobody has suggested Mad Men yet! It's fantastic. The Wire is an amazing show but you need to persevere with it as it takes a while to really get going.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but what about CSI?0 -
On a money saving note you can rent these cheaply from the library :-)Downshifted
September GC £251.21/£250 October £248.82/£250 January £159.53/£2000 -
We love Mad Men, Damages and our favourite has been The Soprano's. We are waiting for Boardwalk Empire to come out as well.
Edit : Agree Angeltreat, Mad Men is fab. Oh loves the Wire but I do struggle with it.
Another Edit : We've just enjoyed Mad Dogs on Sky One but i imagine it will come out on DVD. It's a Brit drama with Phillip Glennister, Max Beesley and John Sims set in Majorca, it was very good.0 -
If you can bear subtitles (or speak French!) 'Spiral' is brilliant - French cop drama, quite gory in parts but quite addictive. Series 1 and 2 on DVD - 3 has just finished on the telly.
I watched all of series 1 in one sitting - not recommended if you need to be up the next day!0 -
i've started taping the swedish versions of wallander on bbc 4 each week (2 still to watch at some point). might be an option? not quite as 'bleak' as the branagh versions but still very good.
we also use lovefilm dvd rentals (via tesco for clubcard points, obviously
) and with 100 odd dvds on the list, it's always a surprise when something arrives as i forget what went on the list (although sometimes it's clearly something the OH put on there that i've hated!!). they have a lot of TV series on there.
if you haven't seen damages, it's the best drama series i've ever seen (season one certainly, season 2 still great and haven't seen season 3 yet)
(although i should confess that i didn't really get into boardwalk empire... gave up after an episode and a half! saw the first one of the wire and didn't get into it, but will borrow it again and try with subtitles to start with as everyone says it is well worth persevering):happyhear0 -
Dexter is good, if a bit gory in places.
The mentalist is good and ideal for those nights when you're too tired to watch something full-on
I love The Good Wife
Parenthood is a recent US show that I've really enjoyed. Not sure if it's out on DVD yet
And a bit off the wall but The Gilmore Girls is one of the best shows around for my money. I've loaned it to a lot of friends and most of their husbands have been not keen to start with then totally won over.
Boardwalk Empire is great too
As for The Wire, it's a show you are either watching or you're not. It's not for everyone and it's very intensive watching.0 -
I don't think it will be released on DVD in the UK for a while as it is only about five episodes into its run on Sky 1 but The Chicago Code is a cop series from the makers of The Shield. It is about a woman who becomes chief of police in Chicago and forms a small taskforce to deal with corruption amongst the police and city officials.
.
As for this, don't get too attached, afraid it's been cancelled after one season in the US. Although I believe it's being shopped around other networks just in case someone takes pity on it...0 -
The Street is probably the best British TV series ever. An absolute bargain for £16 - it's £32 on Play!0

You can also rent box sets from Blockbuster.
If you're interested in some older stuff what about:
Sharpe
Shogun
Cracker
Life on Mars0
