Tv box set advice

With 3 young children, OH and I don't get out as often as we'd like and are finding less and less to watch on TV which appeals (we only have free view not cable or sky). So I wondered if anyone could recommend anything we might like to watch which we could buy as a box set.
Some background. We are in early 40's. Previous things we have liked are the west wing, sopranos, the shield, Rome, the Tudors, spooks. Prefer a strong drama series, and not into science fiction or fantasy really. We have a multi region DVD so would consider US series not released or shown here from amazon.com
So, if you have broadly liked similar shows to us, or are roughly our age, what shows do you like to watch which we might consider investing in?
Thanks

Boardwalk Empire perhaps? It's a mob drama set in prohibition era Atlantic City loosely based on the real life story of Enoch Johnson who served in various political offices whilst also being a leader of the Irish mob and had ties to the !!!!!. There is a lot of sexual content to the series though which you may or may not have an issue with - I'd say it is a little more explicit in that regard than The Sopranos was. It is an HBO production, as was The Sopranos.
1st season should be released on DVD sometime soon in the UK. I'm not sure if it has already been released in the US.
EDIT: How odd that the common name for the Cosa Nostra would be blocked.

Hi
We are in our late 30's (how in earth did that happen ha!).
Boxsets we have watched are The Wire, 24, Prison Break, The Good wife, Lost (bit fantasy in that though), Jericho. We have The Pacific and Band of brothers if you like war dramas.
Broadwalk Empire was really good. We enjoyed that.0 -
Fantastic! Haven't heard of a lot of these before but a lot of them sound just up our street.
Keep em coming folks! Much appreciated!0 -
Definitely highly recommend "The Wire".
Also enjoyed: Dexter, Breaking Bad, True Blood, Justified, 30 Rock (Sitcom)
Enjoy!0 -
I don't think it will be released on DVD in the UK for a while as it is only about five episodes into its run on Sky 1 but The Chicago Code is a cop series from the makers of The Shield. It is about a woman who becomes chief of police in Chicago and forms a small taskforce to deal with corruption amongst the police and city officials.
Blue Bloods is another fairly good cop series about a multi-generational family of law enforcers with an "investigation of the week" type of format and a few continuing themes.0 -
House!
Absolutely brilliant! And Hugh Laurie's one liners are amazing x#JusticeForGrenfell0 -
Def recommend The Wire.
If you like period drame Downton Abbey.
Also highly recommend Band of Brothers and North and South (the series about the American Civil War starring Patrick Swayze)
Also Bleak House. Sounds arty farty but it is very absorbing. It was the BBC drama starring Gillian Anderson. My favourite box set of all time.0 -
We've been watching House, and it's brilliant.0

Modern Family is wonderful
Breaking Bad is excellent
24 is addictive
The Good Wife is great
The Mentalist is a harmless cop/detective based drama
The Middle is very funny
Community is supposed to be brilliant (high score on IMDB) and recommended by an American friend of ours.
Lots of good suggestions on here already, that we haven't had chance to watch yet: The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter ...,___,
