Zebra Crossing - near-miss

Ring the police on the non emergency number.
When they need to top up their crime figures, they'll nip out and ticket them.
if he lives in a village like mine then even getting through to report 4x4 etc on the pavement is a waste of time as the cars will have gone
we in our village are more proactive as we have monthly meets with the police and they target persistent nuisances like parking in the high street illegaly or kids trashing the local park on warm summer nights0 -
here is the highway code page for pedestrians
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070108
it says that if a pedestrian is already crossing at a junction, the car coming round the corner must give way.
also says at a zebra crossing the pedestrian must make sure that cars have stopped...
however this page says that you MUST give way, as a driver if someone is on the crossing... http://www.findleys.co.uk/highway_code/pedestrian_crossings.html0 -
OP do what i did,fit some air horns and next time it happens give em some if they arent going to read the highway code
You could, but then I'd be standing on the crossing while I report you to the police for using the horn while stationary. They may not care, but you'd be sitting there for a while.
The thing about our village, is the police do come out.
Same as for the parking.0 -

.
so you would walk out without looking then and as i blew the horn to advise my presence you would be on the mobile phone phoning the police:rotfl:
wow you are a busy beever:D0 -

The key phrase in your code for pedestrians is
"Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing."
So once you're on the crossing, they have to stop. No if's, no but's.
The driver can't claim they were going too fast, or there wasn't enough time, or they weren't looking.
In fact until you throw yourself out in front of a car, no driver actually has to stop to let you cross, but once you do, they realise they should have planned for it.0 -
OP - according to the Highway Code - you were in the right, she was in the wrong as she did not look and did not make sure the traffic had stopped before crossing.
However, had you hit her, if there were no witnesses, I guess it would be your word against hers, unless of course she admited to not looking. Makes you think.........
Lucky you managed to stop. Was she oblivious to your emergency stop by the way?0 -

No, I'd be on the phone reporting you for the reasons I said.
If you admit to the police you weren't expecting anyone to step onto the crossing, and weren't prepared to stop, that's your choice.
Either way you'd be waiting a lot longer for your impatience.
Maybe you need to read the highway code?0 -

No, op was in the wrong.
Traffic must stop when a pedestrian steps onto the crossing.
The pedestrian does not have to wait for a gap, or for a kind motorist to let them over.0 -
A sensible pedestrian would do this by just putting a single foot on the road, "claiming" the crossing without putting themself at risk from a driver that is unable to overcome the laws of physics.
My personal "favourite" is the young mothers that swing out the pushchair into the road when they turn around. Most crossings have fences these days which obscure a pushchair. Then they stand with their feet on the curb oblivious to the fact that their child is 3 feet out into traffic.
Bonus points if they do this on a busy road and not at a crossing0
