Is a car worth 80k?

I watch Top Gear, I know there are hugely, uncontrollably expensive cars out there.
But I drive past my local car showroom every morning and there are two Range Rovers outside, on prices at 77k+, one at 84k+
I am quite poor, therefore to me this is obviously a ridiculous, unimaginable sum of money to spend on a car (in fact anything!). I know some people are rich and would not think 77k was a lot of money. But is it still not a lot of money for a CAR? No matter how rich you are???
Surely even if you are stupidly loaded you still want to make sensible choices about what you spend?

Probably the best 80K i ever spent if im honest. I love my RR and whilst the price of fuel is stupidly high I use it mainly on weekends. But I love it!!"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

If I was stupidly loaded, I'd want to spend my money in a way that gives me most pleasure.
If that's buying a fancy car, investing in my favourite football team or providing finance for my favourite charity then so be it.
On a middle income, my treat usually comes every 3 or 4 years. A brand new car. Usually it's the best value special edition Ford or Vauxhall I can afford. The £11k Focus did the job last time - best car I've ever had!
If I was loaded, I would willingly spend a lot more on a car!0 -

You just use it for play then? I suppose I'm so ingrained in budgeting now that I probably wouldn't be able to spend the money even if I had it! I'd feel like going in there and saying 'do you think I'm MENTAL, you price a car at 80k, are you taking the p!ss'
Don't mean to infer you are mental but I just cannot grasp it0 -

It's not the truly rich that buy them, it's the wannabe's.
Next time you see a young woman dropping the kids off at school in one of those £80k Ranger Rovers, just ask yourself how many credit cards they're balancing to pay for their "keeping up with the jones" lifestyle.
It would only take for that family to loose one wage and they'd be on the living on the street within a month.
10 years ago I lived (with parents) in a very prestigious area, there wasn't a house in the street worth less than 800k and each one had over an acre of land for a back garden.
I can't think of even one person in that street who had a car newer than 5 years old, one guy even owned a battered old Vauxhall Cavalier.
Nice people too, really down to earth.
Parents sold the house, put the money away and moved to a small village, street full of small 3-4 bedroom houses, every drive has a Merc/BMW/Jag/etc and everyone in that street (except the elderly neighbour) is as arrogant as f**k.
People with money don't spend it, they invest it.... That's why they've got money

Yeh - I use public transport for work and that unless i have to go far then maybe ill take it then..But not often.
Dont get me wrong though - I also have to watch my money like everyone else but i fancied a treat after such a good year at work so thought 'why not'"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

This is quite often the case Strider - I'm with you there, I really couldn't care less about impressing people with expensive items. I'm probably perversely the opposite in fact
Don't get me wrong - I am in no way jealous or thinking 'why can they afford that and I can't'... I just don't get why you would0 -

I feel a bit bad - I don't mean to say you're wrong for wanting to treat yourself to whatever you want. I suppose it just made me realise how tight I am...and will always be. I just can't make sense in my head that a car could be worth that much! But I guess I would get more enjoyment out of an old banger and each to their own :-)0 -

Im not a wannabee rich at all. I work hard for my money and ill spend it on what i like thankyou. Dont judge everyone with you stereotype thankyou - It smacks of bitterness."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

I'm into amatuer radio. I could by a transceiver for £500 but I spent 3 times that. Why? Build quality and performance is far better for a start.
And take something like a Bentley. There's a program on the Discovery Network called Megafactories. One thing they do is follow the manufacture of a Monaro. When you've watched that programme and then watched the other they do on a mass produced car you can see why the Monaro is the price it is. You don't get someone spending 40hrs cutting and stitching up the leather on a Ford Mondeo steering wheel.0
