wow , never thought you'd be able to put dumplings in,

i got a slow cooker a few week's ago. still not used it. and i was only thinking a coupel days ago i wonder if when i do use it , if i can still make dumpling. how wonderful.
  • Thanks lil me! I was planning on using the medium setting and making them a regular size. Do you think an hour - 1 1/2 hours or so would suffice?

  • Hi donner_kebab,
No doubt other people have better experiences of making dumplings in a slow cooker, but in my opinion once the stew has cooked in the SC, *bung the whole lot in a large saucepan and making sure the stew is bubbling, pop in your dumplings, put on the lid and they will be beautifully risen and fluffy in about 20-25 minutes.

I find this works far better than cooking dumplings in the SC. The cold dumplings make the temperature of the stew drop dramatically and therefore (even on high) the dumplings will take nearly 1.5 hours to cook.
That's my recent experience anyway, HTH.

The alternative is to cook the stew overnight tonight and then do my *first suggestion!;)

I put them in for 1 hour on low and they work.

I usually give mine an hour...they are yummy. (I put the lid back on to keep the temperature up)

I have seen a recipe that puts a spot of horseradish into the dumpling mix...not tried it myself, but it sounded good.

I make my duplings quite small, then blitz them in the microwave, before adding in the slow cooker
  • Last week I made a stew before I left for work. Whilst rummaging in my freezer I found the remains of an Aunt B*****s bag of frozen dumplings. On the bag it said that you could put them in from frozen at the start of cooking if you like them soft or nearer the end it you like them crispier. They cooked fine.
ps I usually make my own dumplings if I am around at home, but I knew I was going to be late home so I compromised - home made stew and ready made dumplings
  • Thanks for all your help guys! Well stew is in the SC on medium and I am gonna be leaving this for about 6 - 7 hours or so...and will be adding the dumplings towards the end and will let you know how I get on! It is simmering away very gently...hope it will be cooked in 6/7 hours on a simmer! Sorry I worry like a silly woman sometimes! Sure it will be fine :)

Oh,yes we have just had beef brisket cooked in a can of guinness in the slow cooker and added dumplings 45min before the end just to help thicken the gravy.
It was yum, not a scrap left on the childrens plates so it must of been good.
Served with creamy mash and cabage, leeks cooked with fried bacon.

I'm sure you will find you have a great meal. My SC cookbook has a recipe for beef with dumplings...and I add them one hour before we want to eat and it's always been successful. Bon appetit!
