Have you thought about stepping into his shoes here for a moment......... probably not, he's a friend and if one of mine went through this and I considered them a true friend then this minor inconvenience would not bother me, for one second..... perhaps you need to look at yourselves...

I think your missing the point. Had this person been a true friend and that was the concern, the OP wouldn't be here asking for advice, we would know nothing about it!!!

Guy loses mrs. Guy then loses job. Car then breaks down and your hassling him to move it. Give him a break he's probably feeling the worst he's ever felt in his life and he has his "friend" to deal with as well.

Failing that as mentioned already stick it on the road.....

Not just me that thought cutting the grass wasn't quite so important then.
I'd probably get him down for the weekend, get the beers in, and give him a hand fixing it.

You got to love the assumptions, who said he was heartbroken and suicidal. No one has said he was moping about in floods of tears 24/7 for all you know he could have been out partying every night after losing his misses which cost him his job, again an assumption. The OP may or may not be a heartless person but they haven't asked for advice on that, just how to get rid of the car.

I had this very same problem, under very similar circumstances even.

I rang the scrap man, and told my "friend" whan it was going to be collected.
So i set in motion that either he took it or the scrap man was going to take it.
either way their would be no car on my drive after that day, in this scenario it gave my "friend" the incentive to retieve the vehicle

Assuming that your 'friend' called your bluff, how did you manage/intend to scrap the offending vehicle without the appropriate documents?

At the time the scrap man was not quite so bothered about the paperwork. I am sure a few phone calls would achieve the required result.

Where exactly do you stand legally if you scrap a car that doesn't belong to you then? I know you'll reply by saying 'it was on my property' but surely it doesn't follow that you can legally scrap another person's car?

Surely you could end up in court for scrapping another person's car and liable for the cost of the vehicle regardless of their vehicle being parked on your property or not?

Just ask him if he wouldn't mind giving you the keys and the V5, and advise that any money you get from ebay/the scrap-man will go towards his rent.

    Theft.
Worse the (ex) friend can be done for is a civil offense, the op can go to court to get him ordered to move his car, if he doesn't, he can go back to court and they can order it removed, through the op on his behalf.

A good few years ago the scrappies would take anything V5 or not, now its a different matter though. Your far better just getting it out onto the main road without causing any damage to it, report the car to the local police station.....simples
